A little foot note....Comparing the Mitsu P73 640nm LD to the C-Mount 650 5W from Lazeerer...

It has been demonstrated that the Mitsu. P73 LD can be configured into a Dual or Quad Multi-diode optically corrected unit...BUT...in a MUCH larger and more complex build.

I should note that the P-73 can be optically "corrected" ( with cylinderical lenses) to greatly improve the farfield beam geometry and will completely eliminate the line geometry and provide a nice tight beam ( divergence of approximately 1.2 Mrad )....but...the number of extra optical components increases and the optical alignment is quite demanding.

It is completely possible to correct a single P-73 LD....in the HH format....but a Multi-diode unit in the HH format.....while possible....would be quite......large !!!

BUT....why bother !!! ???

The P-73 can be slightly over driven to deliver 1W per LD.....SOoo... at LEAST three (3) P-73 diodes would be required to deliver the luminosity of a single C-Mount 650 5W ( LAZ-C650).

The downside of any Multi-diode design is cost,complexity and alignment stabillity. The more complex....the more alignment stabillity becomes problematic.

With the LAZ-C650....there is but a single LD....with a simple Plano Convex 50mm fl lense.....and with the beam characteristics seen....seems like a " No Brainer" to me !!!....AND...at 8 cents/mW....what a bargin !!!

It is a really nice diode and a cool build...

Nice to have a C-Mount build/kit, and know that I can easily swap other C-Mount diodes in there at some future point. (although at this point, I don't see changing this diode!)

It would be hard for me to explain how much I love this C Mount Stubby. I got to put on a bit of a light show with it and my other lasers across a pond and against a bank about 50 yards away. The ranch had a bunch of people out and we all sat on the dam ooohing and awwwing. I was also lighting up hill tops a mile and more away. Got tremendous effects shining it off the water close to the bank. By Far the C Mount was the star of the show. Lots of people wanted to know all about these wondrous devices.

The only thing that saves me from noob guilt at being blessed with the ownership of this special jayrob creation is knowing how much I had to pay for it.

C-Mound diodes are easy to install if you have the heatsink and everything ready...

But even so, your not an noob now! :beer:
