Sorry for stealing the title SBA but I just couldn't resist!


The newest heat sink you see Mrcrouse offering for the the Ophir heads is one I poorly described to him via PM. He was able to take what I said and turn it into that!

The heat sink arrived securely wrapped and with all mounting hardware.



Counter sunk holes that bolt the Ophir to the heat sink. And fins for cooling.



The base plate has two holes to mount to the bottom of the sensor and also 4 holes (2 on each side) to bolt the base to the top section. Center hole is for a tripod. Extremely tight fit with everything.



Was such a tight fit I had to use a file and remove a small portion from the sides. We were aware of this going in. If I were to send him my Ophir then it would off been a more precise fit. But I just could be without my sensor for a couple weeks! Filed it down until it was a smooth press in with my vice. About half the pressure required to press a diode all the way until in bottomed out. So not to tight.



Just to make sure I didn't break anything I had to test it really quick. Still works like a champ.



Counter sunk mounting holes on top with provided hardware.



Nice flush fit on the front and back.



Here you can see the 4 bolts that hold the base to the sides and the 2 screws that mount to the sensor from the bottom.



As always I would recommend Mrcrouse to anyone looking for something awesome to add to their collection.

Very nice... but the thought of those shiny reflective surfaces
and 20 Watts runs chills down my spine...

Will be staying under 5W for the most part. Depending on how high my 532 build will take itmI'm not sure. Even with second hand surplus crystals I'm hopping for 2W 532. Will be doing long burns on that one thats why I went with the heatsink.

I agree though. Trying to get a really powerfull beam aligned on a sensor surrounded by a mirror could be dangerous. Most of my test are fairly close to the head though andmI'm always wearing goggles so its of no concern to me.
 
I love the looks on the ophir, what you could do is sand just the front face of all the heat sink, than paint it flat black with those BBQ hi temp paints.

you could keep all the mirror finish on the other sides of the heat sink but at least you would be safer with your lasers, It is not just a matter of your wearing your protective gear, it's the fact that on a mirror finish reflection you can really have some type of problem. With a powerfull laser it could just burn something just on the reflection. I wouldn't trust it as it is.
 
Speedy, I almost went for Mrcrouse's beauty of a heatsink! But, the idea of the price compared to $3 was too painful, considering I still need to build a proper LPM...and so many custom builds!

When I am done with the LPM and finish my single-mode collection, I may just join you in this club.

Ive never really been a looks guy, I'm more functionality. When I was looking through his heat sinks one day this design just jumped into my head and I had to do it. I wont be taking it anywhere near 20W. Not even close to 10W. It will help dissipate heat during long burns though. In reality if you have good contact between your case and heat sink it probably functions better than mine. Find a computer case fan to blow on the fins and you're all set!
 
Although besides the problem of having the laser inadvertently strike the shiny surface, polished finishes are also poor dissipators of heat via radiation compared to a matte black anodized surface. - But only a few percent and since you said you won't be taking it anywhere near 20W, it should be fine. :) I just don't like polished surfaces because fingerprints leave marks on them.
 
Yeah, I have already picked it up to "clean" before using it. It definitional has that look that will make my friends say WTF is that! So then I get to talk about lasers haha. The
reason I went with a sink at all is because I will be doing 1-2 hour test on a 2W 532 so I need so heat dissipation. Will put a fan across the fins too
 
Nice, makes it look meaner too :) just make sure the fan airflow does not pass the front along the absorber as it will skew the reading.

Obviously if you cool the thermopile disk with a fan you will get an inaccurate reading. Must just be one of those days!
 
got to love the mrcrouse stuff. got the same lab style heatsink as well and just love it!

You will also get inaccurate readings by cooling the Head/Heatsink
below ambient room temperature unevenly or with fluctuating air
currents.

i thought using any type of enclosure on a LPM sensor is a bad idea?
Jerry (Laserbee) said it would disturb the heat dissipation process of the calorimeter

Not to detract from Jerry's skill or knowledge, but if it was designed to take higher wattage measurements by heatsinking it, I'll trust the very smart Isreali Jews who designed and built the Ophir.

I've just ordered mine from Mrcrouse, mine is just the three sided one.
I'm going to have Mike anodize it black, I was also afraid of any stray reflections!

After seeing the wrap around style on your Ophir, it kind of makes me want to upgrade mine.
