Well I have this old iron from a Wood Burning kit I found in my garage months ago.

Here's a picture of the burner:

I asked if it would be ok to use as a soldering iron? This is from a wood burning kit, not from a soldering iron kit... So I don't know if it will melt the solder...
 
There's only one way to find out.. ;)
I see no reason why it shoudn't. As long as it reaches a high enough temperature it should work.

It depends on availability in your area. Any store selling electronic supplies will carry solder. We yanks have, among other places to buy, Radio Shack.
 
I buy mine at a local electronics store, but really any electronics store sells it. In my opinion its not worth buying it online when you can buy it locally. Buying it online will be cheaper though.
 
This will NOT be ESD protected

Now, LOTS of members use irons that are not protected for ESD

That in itself is not a reason not to try it

Just be aware, if one of your diodes dies , seemingly without cause, look to this cause ;)

You want an ESD safe iron. I have these iron. It looks cheap and it is cheap but it does the job very good. :)

You're kidding... right...

Hmmmm.... lets see...
You want to do some electrical soldering and you want
to use a Wood Burning Tool.... Hmmmm

Why not use a candle on a stick....:undecided:

How about getting a SOLDERING IRON to do some proper
soldering with a proper tool.... Ive seen really cheap soldering
irons for under $10.00...

What's the difference between my iron and those 10$ irons? They both heat up the tip and melt the solder...?
 
I should have thought of the ESD... that could be an issue.
As others have said, just go and buy a $10 iron... although that might have issues with ESD too (I think my cheap iron had a ESD issue).
