Ya know, It's hard to ask a "stupid" question when you don't know something.
Perhaps a wrong question, in that the answer doesn't help you but it wouldn't be a stupid question. I personally enjoy answering just those sorts of questions in a way that makes the asker even more puzzled...you always get an honest confused facial expression followed by the exasperation look...makes me smile every time.
Of course I then correct the asker and let them know the question that will give them the results they want to know and then usually answer the opposite...I'm a trouble maker.

There must be hundreds of definitions that could be used to answer "LPM ?"...like length per melon, lights per metre, localized performance metrics, or others.
Too bad "Guy" wasn't a little more playful with his answer...
Even if he just listed a couple of options and let "lil" figure it out himself..."Lilcomposer Purchased Motorcycle"...
:p

Perhaps a bit more clarification of my point...
Stupid questions are easy to ask. By nature, by being lazy as Infinitus said, the person could ask a blatantly obvious question that by merit is only serving to indicate the laziness of the asker. This constitutes being stupid. <In a Forest Gump voice> "Stupid is as stupid does."
We have had many of those here and most find out quickly how the membership, as a whole, enjoys their lack of effort.
Then there are those who honestly don't know and ask.
If it is a common question then the answer usually includes a "friendly" reminder to use the search function.
(Some members just treat their friends terribly though...)

So after reading the title of this thread, how can I get the old Paul McCartney song "Somebody's knocking at my door. Somebody's ringing my bell." out of my head ?
"Do me a favor, open the door. Let `em in. Oooooo yeah yeah...

Yup I'm an @$$hole. I'm also usually the first one to get the call at 4am in the morning when the $hit hits the fan... so it all works out:p

I'm sorry. I hope I didn't offend.

Nope, as Shorty already explained, just a friendly reminder to just use the search first, ask question second :)

As a rule of the thumb you should always do a little reading first before posting a question in a technical forum.

The first 2 links in my signature would be a good place to start, and there are Stickies posted on just about all the boards to give you an idea whats going on.

If the cops take it any further tell them you only bought the lasers to detect the smoke coming through from next door.....

I once fell out with a neighbour over their noisy all night parties it eventually escalated into violence. Luckily one night they mysteriously disappeared never to return ;)

Yeah I wish.....

Actually I moved house then went back and.........Oh eh....I'll take the Fifth

I don't know what a "signature" is. Nor do I know how to access it. Thanks for your support though. Makes me feel welcome.

Heh the cops don't work that fast...

When I was netminning at an ISP the RCMP (Canadian FBI sorta) called me and wanted logs / customer information for a child pron investigation from 3 FREEKIN YEARS AGO!

Sadly I didn't have the logs going back that far... Anyway give it a few years and then you'll be safe :p

CPAPS are nasty when it comes to smoke.

Get a flush kit. They wash the hose, then sterilize it. Usually have a anti-allergenic cleaner in it.

Flush it with copious amounts of warm, clean, water when cleaning it. Copious means, many, many, litres

Get a spare hose, so you have one while the other one dries.

Replace the machine filters as often as you can.

Get a room air HEPA filter machine. If you cannot afford one, a jury rig with a HEPA furnace filter and some muffin fans works.

If not, a cheap electrostatic filter will knock it down, but you are forever cleaning the room.

Avoid hotels, period. They never clean the flues/ducts in the building.

Good Luck,

Steve

just an update to this issue. i had a visit fron the cops earlier today with the results of the testing they ran on the cheap $2 keychain lasers they took. and they turned out to be a 1.1mw and a 2.4mw laser. so they have taken a DNA swab and i was told i would receive a summons to court in the next 6 to 8 weeks. which means im going to be charged with possesion of a dangerous implement/illegal weapon. The penalty may be up to 2 years imprisonment or a fine of up to $5,500.
however in all this they were purchased from shops in australia after the law came into effect so im not sure if i can get off the charge as the shop are the one who were selling lasers advertised as 1mw yet they were overspec. i informed the officer where i bought them from and they said they would go and investigate if they are selling overspec lasers. so im really hopeing i can get off of these charges. but the main thing is about why the hell they would take my DNA

and on top of it all i have no way of affording a good lawyer.

Holy crap. I wish you the best of luck in the upcoming legal debacle... seriously. I'd pack up the rest of your lasers in some boxes and put it in storage somewhere safe and unsuspected, perhaps a trusted family member's place. You don't want them to come in and do a search and find anything stronger at this point.

Stick to the fact that they were bought locally and that you had NO IDEA they were oversepc, and hope for the best.

I'm never going to Australia. As if the funnel web wasn't bad enough....

Wow... I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the police.

I'm amazed that they took a DNA swab... did they have a court order for it?

Never volunteer evidence like that. Despite what CSI type shows would have you believe, DNA tests are not infallible (as they are done by human being who make mistakes), and once your DNA is in the system, you can forget about getting it out. You're also potentially exposing your relatives through close matches:undecided:

As far as the lasers are concerned, if you haven't already done as Sigurthr suggests, you should definitely "dispose" of all your other lasers.

After that, try to document where you purchased the lasers. Show that you didn't knowingly buy the illegal devices, and that as far as you knew they were <1mW.

Lastly you should explore any option that's available to be get certified or to have a legal reason for having the lasers.

Hope it all works out for the best and blows over with a small slap on the wrist fine.

Keep us posted. (Although you should probably delete any posts relating to other lasers you may own. If your computer is searched you don't want to lead cops to a huge trove of data they may be able to use against you.)
