wow... check what I found... maybe a new driver coming our way with this:

SIMPLE SWITCHER Nano Module Demo

ULTRA SMALL, ULTRA EFFICIENT SWITCHING REGULATOR with INTEGRATED SOFT-START
INTEGRATED INDUCTOR!!! WOW!!
UP TO 1A with LOW RIPPLE AND NOISE!:drool:

i just thought it might inspire someone to make the smallest driver in a handheld :D

So that would be useful for... driving REDs from a single lithium ion?

2x lithium ions would provide higher than the max VIN of that IC, and with 1x lithium ion you would be limited to diode with a Vf lower than 3.7V.

This would be amazing if it was capable of boosting!

oh drat... I didn't see that :D I was pretty excited :D
anyway here is a boost alternative that looks sweet too :)

LMR62421 - SIMPLE SWITCHER 24Vout, 2.1A Step-Up Voltage Regulator in SOT-23 and LLP

it's pretty new 03.10.2011(not on the market yet) but when it gets out I will buy some for testing !!!

Do we know when the LMR62421 will be out?

That looks fairly promising. 8 components by my count. 2A output ability. SOT-23 package is doable for DIY drivers.

With a little better documentation in their final datasheet, I think even I could design a boost driver ;)

From National a few minutes ago:

"[T]he LMR62421 part should be available in aprox. 6 weeks."

I will definitely pick up some of these when they come out!

Looks like it's pin compatible with lm3410, I already have a board designed to put it on!

Edit: actually no it's not any good :( It's switch current is 2.1A so you may get 1Amp out of it boosting to a 445.

It looks like it's exactly the same as the lm3410 but with a lower switch current.

You have a working boost driver board, and you're not sharing that marvelous creation with the community!? ;)

Still in test phase! It should be done very soon. Remember that one I showed you a few months ago? It's that one.

See my edit^

Yeah it's got 2.8A max switch current compared to this with 2.1A, and everything else seems identical.

Do you guys want to open up an LM3410 "community design" ?

I was going to try my hand at designing a boost using that IC myself. I think it would be cool to do that out in the open-source. It doesn't look too daunting. Would be pretty cool to have a DDL-esque design out in the open that anyone could use!

hey RHD, I actually have a board wtih LM3410 at home, but I couldn't get it outputing more than 600mA at 4.2V input 5.5V output... I think it's the inductor or maybe not so I left it as is,

I used 3A 4.7uH, it's quite large, but i think i must try some other inductor values and post results... I am pretty much free after work this week so I think I will have time to make another board... unless I get started with the dichros I got :D will posts results too

I can't say too much before I get copyright on my product.... but my driver which is in DEV, will have very similar components, but of higher quality than the ones mentioned in this thread :shhh:
