In May, I'm moving. The new living room has huge/long windows, and even with good blinds, it's going to be difficult to get the room dark.
Currently, I don't own a TV, but rather I use a video projector (a traditional lamp-based NEC @ 3000 lumens) to watch movies projected against a white wall.
I like this ^ approach, and want to duplicate it again after the move. My NEC is not going to come with me. It's old, heavy, the lamp is near replacement time, and it's not going to be bright enough in the new room. So I'm in the market for a new projector. Actually, I wouldn't mind buying a used projector on eBay if it makes economic sense.
But I need some input. I have absolutely no clue what's good right now, where the value lies, or what technology to look for in a projector. My criteria are:
- Greater than 3000 lumens. Ideally 4000, but 3500 would be ok.
- At least 1024 x 768 resolution. HD would be great, but again, not a deal killer.
- LED based would be my preference (or laser-based I guess, but the Casio 4000 lumen units will be too expensive). However, if my target lumen rating isn't possible in LED/Laser, I'll go with a lamp.
I'd like to stay under a budget of $800. If that implies buying something used, that's ok. If you gather from my criteria, the lumen output is the most critical factor here. We'll take other steps to try and improve the viewing experience, but it will always be really important to have a high lumen count.
