Was browsing the new arrivals section of DX just now, and they've had XM-Ls on stars for the past few days (they're cheaper from Cutters) but I just noticed two XM-L based lights in an 18650 form for about $33 each. They claim the drive current is 2.8A, which is just under the max current as stated by Cree.

DealExtreme: $32.70 Eastward YJ J06 CREE XM-L T6 3-Mode 900-Lumen White LED Flashlight with Strap (1*18650)

are these really 900-lumens? :D

Probably not, but these may have the best shot at it, of any single-18650 XM-Ls I've seen in that price range so far.

The XM-L T6-bin *can* hit above 900 lumens when driven at 3A. The DX description says that these drivers supply 2800mA of current, and if that's true, then the specs of these lights would be consistent with ~900 lumen output.

But I wouldn't expect the drivers to actually output 2800mA. Other factors like your battery's capabilities, driver inefficiency, heatsinking, and the inherent *variability* in a manufacturer's posted specs on DX, probably come into play.

That said, if these drivers even supply 1500mA in practice, the T6 bin XM-L should supply upwards of 500 lumens. Not bad for $30!

They might be 900 or so lumens before losses to reflector and lens, even Lumintop's XM-L light is less than 600 OTF lumens.

KD is nice, but their site can be as hard as h-e-double hockey sticks to navigate.
