The original 44 thread is quite long so I thought I would start a part 2 or updated 44 thread.

Now that we have seen what they are and the output available, as well as the wide divergence, what have we done, what do we want to do?

I like doing wood burning art and at a comfortable 10 feet, but mostly at brush stroke speed so I can do grey scale shading and learn all kinds of tricks to make pretty unique wood art.

I may make a power box that's cooled and use a fiber optic to power a light weight wand so painting with light will not mean weight lifting giant heatsinks.

This is more of a proof of concept and getting the power of the 44 under control, but please do share your ideas, builds and pretty blue beam videos.

Blue beams go well with smoke and fire, but please don't panic if your new, this will not blow a hole in you or chop your arm off, burn a few hairs and make you say ouch is about it......but remember to protect our eyes, always wear those laser safety glasses. Any laser can hurt our eyes and these are no exception.

Here is a pair of 44's both with G2's and 6x pairs, I would like to either cube a pair or use an expander, but I want to be able to paint in wood with light at brush stroke speed.

Enjoy, share and stay safe. :)

I have one beam rotated 50-60 degrees so the 5/16 long lines sit like a x on the wood, wave plated would be even better.

This is not art, just pics of the effect demonstrating proof of concept.

Hi Red,
This is my first 44 build in a mag Light host i modded, these hosts were made for the giant 9mm diode power house for cooling. these hosts can take 2-26650's or 2-32650's i prefer the later of course..

I want to combine at least 2 corrected beams and will use no less than 3 x 26650 cells, I am a MX-900 fan but I am about to switch to the Maglite, the 4 C cell unit will hold 3 x 26650's plus a button end spacer.

I know the bulb end of the switch needs to come apart and that's no problem, I have torn up some D cell mags before, but how tough is the switch? Will it hold 5 amps at 10 volts, that's about what I will need from 3 loaded 26650's to feed a pair of SXD's at 4.5a each.

Just 1 SXD with 3 cells draws 2 amps in to put 4.5amp out to the diode and 3 amps in with 2 cells. The same 24 watts.

As voltage drops with discharge amperage has to rise but NUBM44's powered by SXD's draw about 24 watts in and put 22.5 watts out to the diode that puts out 7 watts.

So that's a good driver, it's doing 95% efficiency, the diode is only about 30% efficient at 4.5 amps but that's what it is.

The MX-900 switches will carry 50 watts as I have tested 2 high drain 26650's into a 1 ohm load and they held 8 volts at 8 amps for several minutes, the wire wound ceramic 1 ohm resistors were 300F , they were hot.

I assume the Maglite switch will carry 2 NUBM44's via SXD's it's 50 watts, what is the xenon bulb pulling down?

I think they will hold but I suppose I will test one, I like the 26650's so I want to use a 4 x C cell Maglite, or a D size with a spacer.

Any info is appreciated.

Hi,
To start off the SXD's are the only way to go and your using two, so when properly heat sinked there's no matching other driver that will withstand what your intending to do with two44's. As for the mag lite switch it can handle the draw at the tail end there well built and beefy inside i took many apart. Once i tried shorting out the switch with four 18650's and the wires cooked and the switch was still intact with minor damage. so from what your doing i think the switch will hold out with three 26650's pushing two 44's with good sinking properties. imagine two 44's blazing in sync with beam correction now that's sick, but awesome

As for the MX-900's i really like them between the switch and full Cu heat sink they can handle a lot more. i just ordered 3- 1-3/4 CU washers for the MX-900 to install the new 35mm DTR 9mm press fit heatsinks , just waiting for them to arrive. i have 4- MX-900 hosts with 2 of the CU screw in heatsinks when they were only 38.00.
Being you mentioned the4-C cell mag lines i'll have to look into them. Home depot closed out on the d cell mags and were going for 5.03 each so i went on a scavenger hunt in a 15 mile radius and snagged 11 D cells. Not bad 4 for the price of 1..

Yes you got a bargain. :)

I have studied how to set up the shaping optics and I run my divergence negative then it opens back up, I have another that is tuned for distance, but the 2 in the video get tightest at 6 and 8 feet, the wood is at 15 feet and the spot size is 10% more than at the aperture. Roughly.

I am thinking that combining 2 44's both set for a 75 foot or 25 meter zero then using an expander would be about right for this diode and these pairs, a pair of 8X may be better.

It depends on the expander and the lens width, trying to use say a 10x expander without correcting would need very wide lenses, just ask Alaskan, he aims for 80% at the shoulder I think.

My idea is to have a useable beam from aperture to max working distance, like these 2, they are this good and better anywhere behind the burning wood distance of 15 feet, so If I combine a pair I could double the distance or shrink the spot size and that means higher feed rate.
Otherwise you have a cone and a very range specific working distance, I like a hot beam that works where ever you point it.

So maybe just a pair of 44's corrected and cubed and a 3x reducer/telescopic set could do pretty well and I will move my zero from 6 - 8 feet to about 15, with the 3x I should still hit my max of 75 feet and be able to mark it.

The red pic zeros at 5.5 feet and the blue at 8 feet, I have another that's longer but it gets like splitting hairs with Multi mode. These are both slightly bigger than aperture at 15 feet, but useable all the way.

Combined I can get smoke at 75 feet but no flame, it's amazing what it takes to reach out with MM diodes, but my working range is really 10-15 meters max as my hand is no steadier than that, I don't need to ignite anything past that and not at the cost of closer usefulness.
Otherwise a 12 inch expander set and a big cone to 100 meters, but put it on a tripod, lol.

I suppose the difference is I want to use the power, not look at a dot on a cloud, but I don't point to the sky these days.

Hi,
I see your point about energy density by combining the beams at a specific distance focused on a certain point of impact. It's a shame that we don't have any single modes that have the output of these MM diodes , this should make your endeavor a bit easier to obtain. And yes to the BE it should be a larger lens i think to accommodate the divergence of these high power MM diodes. But it seems your getting closer to to your calculations every time you post on this subject. I always read your posts on the divergence issues and will keeping so, learned a lot from them and it's no easy task without obtaining the correct materialist do so. Trail and error is the key to success in many ways.

Yes it's finding a balance that works for what you want to do, I like having a powerful beam that works from point blank to my max working distance, now I could adjust a relay lens expander each time and fiddle with 2 settings, but to pick it up, turn it on and know it will burn from zero to 30 feet is fun, with 2 diodes combined and a 3x telescopic reduction that can be 100 feet and with more power per square mm.

I discovered long ago you rarely will have 1 tool that does everything the best, rather specialty tools that fit each purpose well, except for a hammer a hammer works for most applications. :D

Hi Red,
Yes you are pertaining to a auto focusing laser with range finder features .. well the way your going it seems like you will be there soon.
Well there's never enough tools for this hobby$$$..
Here are a few pics of my Sinner Cypreus 2 with custom adapter and Jet 10x BE. Burns a hole in a t-shirt at 32Ft on a tripod in 4 seconds.

Nice expander, I really want to beam shape with these 6x pairs then use an expander too.

If that NUBM08e has divergence like the NUBM06 then 6X pairs and an expander will be sweet.

You don't have another expander like that you want to sell do you?

Actually a telescopic reduction would be a nice way to go, but they are likely expensive, I may just throw a SANWU 3x on one for the heck of it.

Hi Rich, you may have to file a taper at the back of your 35mm module to make it seat far enough down to be able to screw your bezel on fully

Hi VV, that should be no problem, a 45 degree off the bottom edge will work. Also it depends how thick the washer will be, if they are thinner than your basic steel washer shouldn't be an issue. Thanks VV...

Rich:)

OK I had to try it, now mine is fixed focus and my G2 zeroed at 15 feet so I could tighten up a bit, but the real trick will be Cyl correction then an expander, my line was about 3/4 inch at 32 feet and putting down the power, with an expander this will be mean.

Together we will get this 44 to dance for us'

hi RED,
With that BE of10x you can press the 9Mx0.5 focus adapter in the adapter that comes with the BE. And with your build hooked up wow that will be awesome..
No i don't have another adapter this welcome with yours when you order one.

This will work out just fine, I will make a plate that has a triangle of adjustment screws and an outer set of lock down screws, so I will get a very true alignment and compensate for any run out in relation to the beam input.

I know it will be sweet, I would have ordered 2 but murphy's law says order 1 and wish I had ordered 2 otherwise I would find an issue, but I know this will do the trick, the input is plenty for my corrected beam, I just hope there are some left so I can order more in a couple weeks after testing.

Next will be a cubed pair of corrected 44's or god willing 08e's with 06 divergence, not that it will matter, this set up should give me more range than I have yard.

Thanks for the nudge. ;)
