I believe they make a protected and unprotected version. I was incorrect about the batteries that I measured today, they are unprotected 18350s.

Protected batteries are longer than normal ones because they have a circuit board attached to the top. Since the unprotected ones are 1-2mm longer, protected ones will be even longer, so they may not fit after all, but I don't have any to measure.

Good!
You can use rcr123 (16340) http://www.lighthound.com/AW-IMR163...LiMN-Rechargeable-Lithium-Battery_p_2626.html or the AW 18350s, http://www.lighthound.com/AW-IMR-18350-700mAh-LiMN-Rechargeable-Lithium-Battery_p_3818.html they will both fit for sure.
I don't know if protected 18350s will fit, since they are longer than normal ones.
Protected batteries are not essential. Unprotected batteries are able to run until the voltage gets so low, the batteries are damaged, protected cells prevent that. So you can run unprotected batteries with no problem if you pay attention to run time and voltage.

His kits are awesome, you won't be disappointed. A little advise, when screwing the heatsink down. Make sure the heatsink doesn't twist while your turning the lid. If the heatsink starts twisting you are also twisting your wires attached to the diode. Don't want that to happen... Good luck, let us know how it goes.
