this is kinda cool if you want some pc control if you have a bit of knowledge you might be able to add pc data logging.
tuxgraphics.org: A Digital DC Power Supply (programmable bench power supply unit), hardware version 3.0
if you are worried about stable just add a 47uf cap and a .1uf cap to the end and that will stable the thing like a rock!
the 47 to hold back large spikes and the .1 to smooth out the small ones.
its a bit over kill but works great for everything not just lasers.

well most of the users would not want to lug a nice large bench psu around. we use them to calibrate the output for the "best driver conditions"
Also bench psus are not that bad as far as their output goes.
Some have on and off spikes but they can be fixed and are generally the very old models.
Truth be told you dont even need a cap on a lm317.
I have one with no cap and its been running strong for over 7 months.
Heck if you want to be "stupid" i know a few people who direct drive their laser. with just 2 aa and their lasers is running just fine... for now. i still call that stupid but leaving a cap of the 317s is not bad.
Adapt the values, and you can push it til 20A without problems
