i had to remove the chat, it was overloading the server

this is one of the risks with using modifcations from vbulletin.org unfortunately, you never know what will happen.

i will look for another chat application but priority now is just making sure data is OK

site was down for about 10 mins but everything should be fine. after disabling the chat memory usage dropped my over 100mb.

sorry for the removal but i need to protect available and integrity of the site

I understand cold. I do hope it gets back. It's been a great resource to have newbies askin questions instead of posting questions that have already been asked a thousand times. Maybe if you went back to the older version. I know that the chat isn't intregal to the forum and it's survived a long time without a chat. For those that are interested until LPF chat can or will get back up you can always go to
www.laserchat.org

yeh the older version had some problems too, laserchat is a great resource and will always be there . i will see if i can find another chat program that is nonvbulletin specific so it limits the risk associated with the database

yeh one of the issues with unofficial vbulletin modifications is they are not always well tested and can have problems

there are other chat mods available but i think it might be safer to use a nonvbulletin specific chat program

yeah it is probably due to a glitch in the application.. when working properly it was using 100mb extra RAM, when it caused the server to go down it took up over ~875mb of ram

i will contact the developer about the glitch

well you could probably put mibbit's laserchat right directly on lpf. wouldn't be that hard I'd assume. Of course I have no clue what I'm talkin bout. so who knows.

How about a java IRC client?

It could either link up to laserchat, or you could run your own IRC server relatively easy. I've hosted an IRC server with hundreds of clients on a pentium 133 with 16mb of ram, so I doubt it would put much strain on the server.
