How did you first find out about high-powered Lasers?

^grazi^ -I think your best bet for that movie nowadays would probably be netflix or hulu, if you could find it you'd have to find a VHS player too lol.

I bought Real Genius on DVD at an FYE several years ago, so I know it exists on DVD.

In fact, a quick search on Amazon showed new DVDs from $5, $10 direct from Amazon.

Excellent movie, not for the laser but for the hilarity. One of the most quotable movies out there, right up there with Anchorman and Holy Grail for me.

Hate to admit but its because of Kipkay I'm here. I saw the video "what Kipkay doesn't tell you" and it pointed me here. I've always loved lasers shows, concerts, and planetariums, but never knew you could buy high powered lasers till I came across DX. Then I saw that they wont ship them here, and that's all I needed to see LOL.

Hey TJ, what video are you reffering to?
I cannot find it on youtube.
From the sound of it, sounds like someone decided to finally go against KipKay... It really was not right of him to tell you to hook up a laser diode to 2x AA batteries directly.
Or a bluray one to resistor and 9V battery.

You're right, I cant find it either. I think the member AMKDeath made it, but I dont see it on his Youtube channel. It was over a year ago, maybe they made him pull it, or it could of been from another member.

Maybe we should make a new one. :eg:

I found out back in 1997 when I signed on with a temp agency (was unemployed and desperate, not the sort of work I'm cut out to do) that placed workers in industrial jobs. They first had me at a packing plant and when that job was over they placed me in a laser machine shop. Just the luck of the draw, as it were. Needless to say I was totally blown away by the 5Kw lasers they used to cut, weld and heat treat metal! So began a huge obsession with lasers - it was perhaps the most boring job I ever had (quality control inspection of laser welded metal parts) but the most fascinating place I ever worked.

After I left that job and went to work doing what I went to college for (art), I still held a deep fascination for lasers and spent countless hours doing web searches (this back in the day of dial-up!) on lasers. Well, one day (in 06' I think) I happened to see this ad for WL promising "burning" green lasers. I thought to my self that was totally bogus, as only huge CO2 and YAG lasers could burn anything. But the company did allow for returns if not satisfied, so I plunked down some money and bought myself a 95mw WL Nexus greenie. This was back when CNI made most of their lasers, so it may have been on spec or better, and boy did it burn!

I sold that laser, but to this day I still have my very first laser pointer - a 1mw red pen-type pointer that I paid $50 for! It's weak and near-worthless, but I still have it around for sentimental value.

:eg: Agreed!
We need a punching line title!
I've got access to a good-q camera, just write the script and provide some good macro shots, drawings and those things.

I'll film some laser driver soldering, and diodes that get connected to 2x AA straight (I got a bin of dead ones from ages ago, good enough to demonstrate what will happen)

People will see the difference immediately.

Imagine a hate mail from KipKay...

I've liked all light sources since I was an infant, and I learned about burning lasers through and ad in the back of PopSci, just like OP.

I got a little spirograph kit for my birthday with 5mW red pointer... that led me to buy a 5mW greenie off the internet. In researching where to buy my green laser pen, I stumbled upon WickedLasers/Techlasers, but never purchased one because of the cost and safety worries.

Then I saw the KipKay video and was hooked on the idea. After much browsing and researching and avoiding doing homework, I found LPF :D

Soon after I had a PHR and safety glasses ordered and after I used it for the first time.... WOW! I was hooked.

Now I've built a custom green in a pretty small host (5.5 inches, runs off 2 AAA's) and am working on my own 7 color build, but with pots on the top of my project box to allow for more than 7 colors... :D It should give me around 275mW when I'm all done :)

Kipkay is a member here. I actually - repped him for that video where the guy points the laser lighter at his face without goggles. The guy is a hack (not in a good sense) and just cares about making money. Which is OK, but safety is always first.

He is a member here?
Is, or was?

From the looks of things I am guessing that he has about 10 red squares next to his avatar here...
