EDIT: here is the deal.

- $200 budget

- im buying my lens and diode from DTR for $94

- i need a compatible host, driver at 1.8A, and battery/batteries.

i want a driver at 1.8A-1.9A, not 1.5A or anything below. and i need a good heatsink to keep duty cycle reasonable.

im interested in building a 1w-2w 445nm hand-held laser

ive been lurking on this website for a while now and i decided it is time for another laser, only this time, i want to build it.

ive been doing my research and i know everything i need in order to build a laser. my only problem is that i have a hard time finding things that are compatible with each other. i understand the importance for stability and heatsinks.

i have my own drill press and can drill some custom heat sinks for myself.

if someone could help me out by pointing me in the right direction or give some suggestions on parts that are compatible with each other that would be amazing.

i have a $200 budget set for this new project if that helps you out at all.

here is a list format if you want to use it.

Format for List:

Host:

Diode:

Driver:

Lens:

Battery:

There are tons of hosts out there and your driver choice can influence what host you go with. The current popular choice for lower cost builds are the buck drivers like the blitz buck or the X-buck and with them you can go with most any 18650(using two 16340's), 2X18650, 2X26650 host you find. Being able to make your own heatsink will be a plus.

I have diodes, lenses and combos with them in modules with leads that will work with those drivers. You just need to make a heatsink that is fit for a 12mm module. Once you have chosen a host we can give you suggestions on batteries. If you go with a buck driver they are a little less demanding on the batteries so you have a lot of good choices there.

Guidesman hosts have good room for a large heatsink and I like the side clicky's.

thanks for the info,

if i go with a BlitzBuck v2 1.17 amp and a 445nm M140 Diode with a nice big copper heatsink to set it in, would i be murdering the diode's lifetime?

@ 1.17A no not at all. That is driving it way below the nominal current so it would last a very long time with a large heatsink. I recommend no more than 1.8A on the M140's so 1.17A is very conservative.

just what i was looking for, thanks.

so if i get:

- DTR's 445nm M140 Diode In Module With Leads & 405-G-2 Glass Lens $94

- X-Drive V6 1.8A $15

i just need a host and a battery now? how big would my host/heatsink need to be to cool this baby down?

I would suggest a medium to large sized heatsinks for a reasonable duty cycle. A C6 being small, Guidesman being medium and say a Saik being Large. Those are just examples of course there are a lot more hosts out there.

Check out these links for host kits.

i really like these two options, id rather order a heatsink than have to mill it myself.

- MXDL Host & Heatsink Combo! (4171 or 3405): http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-mxdl-host-heatsink-combo-4171-3405-a-22512.html

- FandyFire - 1x 18650 or 2x 16340: http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/lazeerer-hosts-heatsinks-sale-thread-68200.html#post983861

i have a hard time imagining the sizes of these. which one would provide a better heatsink/battery options? i really like that copper heat sink...

ALSO, will going with the 405-G-2 Glass Lens cause "size issuses"?

decisions, decisions...

I really like the MXDL's. I used to get the gold and grey versions. Lot of mass. The units handle higher power builds very well. You will want to do the tailcap mod where you pull the plastic spacer and use some adhesive to hold the switch down.:)

those are beautiful. im gonna go with one of those.

now that we got that settled, will going with the 405-G-2 Glass Lens cause "size issuses"?

and does everything look good?

If you can find a MXDL host then you could use two of these with the tail cap mod.(long shipping may be a US seller out there)
UltraFire 18350 3.7V 1200mAh Batteries (Pair) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

or if you wanted some higher quality and quicker to get ones you could go with these.
AW IMR 18350 700mAh LiMN Rechargeable Lithium Battery

i PMd jayrob about the host. if it turns out i have to go with something else, what would you suggest? im willing to sacrifice size for longer cycles.

as for the batteries, those will work for the driver.

EDIT: - FandyFire - 1x 18650 or 2x 16340: http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/lazeerer-hosts-heatsinks-sale-thread-68200.html is looking really good right now
