Well a few weeks ago at a friends house I saw he had a old DLP TV in the garage. I told him I wanted it for the mirrors and whatever else I might find...he said "take it". I went back over the weekend and grab the TV.
The DLP was a 61 inch RCA made in 2004.

while taking this TV apart in my yard my neighbor wondered over to see what I was doing. After telling him what and why he says "I've got part of a big screen TV you can have". So I go over to his place and grabbed what was once the tubes and lenses of a CRT big screen TV.
Now I have 3 more huge optic lenses to mess with.
the outer two lenses are plastic only the middle is glass but I got all 3 CRT's so 3 lenses.

nothing better than free stuff that's awesome :)

People literally throw those out weekly at my complex. Ive seen like 30 of them since ive lived here. Now I will scrap them when I see them and make some money on lens :) heck id sell them for like $5/ea and itd be worth it for me and who ever wants them. Hahaha I just want to smash the left over TV parts, free lens I could care less about :na:

Some of the big plastic Fresnel lenses are worth bucks as they can cut a 2x4 in 1/2 with only sun light, now not all big
screens have the same lenses so you will have to take a few apart to see which ones are the best burners.

Now you can cook food or temper steel for free and have an even smaller carbon foot print ;)

wow 30 of them and you didn't snag some parts? And I care about free lenses love them. And tell me you didn't want the giant first surface mirrors either :)

forgot to post the picture of the cool color wheel on an electric motor.

I couldnt use that massive mirror, especially since I'm moving 1400 miles within a month.........

If I knew those had lens in them like that then I would have taken all of them. I'm selling a old RCA 52" DLP TV right now. Half debating telling the buyer its not for sale and just scraping parts out of it. Might make more money off the lens then the TV whole lol

Got to remember, those big old TVs are college students best friends. Cheap large screens ;)

Livinloud I'd be happy to send you one of the large lenses if you want one just pay shipping

Cool...I took apart one of those old chunker tv`s, and popped apart one of the bulb/lens assemblies inside....only to have some unknown oily liquid spill out everywhere :/

LOL I had the same thing happen when I took one apart. all I got was 3 CRT tubes I assume one for each color RGB only one had a colored filter in it and IIRC it was a green one. I opened it up to take the filter and oil split everywhere. worst yet it was all for nothing the acrylic filter had begun to break down in the oil.
most of the optics were some king of plastic/acrylic I got one large and thick glass optic out of the hole thing

Edit the glass optic i got was the one in the middle in this pick
I only got one.
