Full with. I figured that would be the best way.

Edit. I shot the dot approximately 25' and measured the dot on the wall. I used the full width of the dot in the equation.

When you measure beam diameter at aperture, measure the full beam. When you measure the beam at a distance measure only the brightest area in the middle of the spot.. Full-width half maximum means to measure only the area with the highest intensity out to the point where the intensity drop off to half of it's highest level. This means the dimmer output surrounding the high-intensity middle portion of the spot does not get measured.

For the sake of a good description let's assume that you're measuring a TEM00 spot. This pic shows a bell curve representing the intensity of a TEM00 spot, with the peak being the bright center of the spot, and the sloping sides representing the power dropping as you move away from the center of the spot. To measure FWHM you only measure between the vertical dotted lines:


The same applies to multimode beams, but rather than having an intensity curve that is bell shaped, a multimode curve might have mutliple intensity peaks, but you only measure the most intense part of the spot which is typically in the center.

I am very confused by this.

The industry standards are 50% of max (like electrofreak posted), 37% of max, and 14% of max. I think the 14% is most prevalent.

You might be right about that.. I've run in to FWHM measurements more than others myself, but I'm not definitively sure which is the industry standard.

Just a quick update. I got my new psu in the mail today. Apparently this company does listen to requests by customers and does not lie! They shipped me a new psu and it is analog! They also shipped it ups express! So it got here within like 4 days after it got into the system. They however must have forgot to include keys... luckily the psu keyswitch was in the ON position... I will however request a set of keys. The new psu was in good shape but was still slightly damaged... I assume it was due to the poor packing foam... Though only one corner is bent and its only bent slightly... The unit works like new and I will update this a little later or perhaps tomorrow. For anyone wondering...m the analog model can be powered with a simple computer psu. Just use the 5V rails. Thanks jedirock for the help.

i would assume you could use a comp psu but remember to set your psu up to be able to be used out side of a computer.

I "am" using a computer psu. Thanks chip. I was using the same psu to power my amp for my subs. Since I have a vehicle now I don't need the psu for my subs anymore so its new purpous is to power my labby

Chip was reminding people to set the PSU up so it can be used as a standalone unit which usually involves shorting 2 pins on the motherboard connector.

thats quite impressive for the price!

how stable was it? did you leave it running for a while to see if it heated up noticeably/dipped in power?

I think the max amount of time I left it run for was about 30 minutes ant it stays >1700mW. It doesn't dip in power but it does fluctuate between 1700-1800. I assume this is because it runs in tem11.

If you would like me to log some numbers for you I can probably let it run for a few hours and lpm it every 15 mins or so.
