Default Green Laser Diode in TO-56

This TO-56 Green laser should fit many of the hosts we are currently using:

Quote:
Finnish start-up EpiCrystals Inc. has announced what it claims is “the smallest and most efficient green light source for pico projectors.” EpiCrystal’s game plan is that RGB (red, green, blue) laser technology will revolutionize smartphones, enabling them to project photos, video presentations and movies on almost any surface with HD-level quality and resolution. The green laser module will be available in Q1, 2012 for $45.00 in 10K volumes.

EpiCrystal Vice President of Business Development Tomi Jouhti sent these details:

• Laser has two main components: GaAs-based 1064nm IR laser chip and a PPLN waveguide type nonlinear crystal

• Laser chip has an integrated 45-degree folding mirror and lens (both are made at wafer level) for efficient coupling

• Bright true green color (532nm)

• Laser operates in passively Q-switched mode (very simple construction, three-contact laser)

• Wide band QPM (quasi phase matching) in the crystal

• Wide band SBG (surface Bragg grating) in the crystal

• SBG locks the central frequency of the IR laser

• Spectrum width 0.5-1.0nm –> reduced speckle

• 60+ mW optical output power

• 100+ MHz modulation speed

• TO56 module, volume ~0.2cc
Here is a little more info on the very-efficient PPLN (periodically poled lithium niobate) conversion:

Should be good for 120mw or so.

Direct doubling done inside the can. Very nice.

Who wants to call in for the 10,000 unit order?

That is a lot in a small package. So if they are designing the diode from the ground up why not just make it emit direct 532 light instead of dealing what seems to me to be a much more complex design?

DTR;

A few companies have been trying that direct diode route.

I have not seen any commercial production quantities.

its too bad $45 will not be the price that we will see. Its also pretty expensive for a diode in bulk quantities. At that price unless it drops a lot more with higher volume I dont think many pico projectors will be using it since it would make up almost a quarter of the devices retail price (assuming $200)

Helios;

I remember trying hard to obtain Nichia 445nm laser diodes about 12 months ago.

They were ~$500, and impossible to get.

Now they are ~$40, and plentiful.

The 515nm diodes are in commercial production, and they're all over the place. They're not some sort of theoretical clean room invention that stays under lock and key. There are numerous commercial lasers for sale using them right now.

I've got a google news keyword alert on 515nm, and in the last 6 months I've seen at least a half dozen different companies selling 515nm direct diode labbies. I have even obtained a quote for one of the 515nm bare diodes ($7k+ for one. IE, way outside anyone here's price range).

The diodes are being commercially produced, and they're out in the market. They're just not in OUR market, because they're not in any consumer electronics yet.

But were they $500 in 10K quantities? Thats what is discouraging as the advertised $45 is not to individuals but obviously to electronics manufactures. I could be wrong though maybe it will drop a lot in the upcoming months.

Guys what about the red in that projector. Aren't they going to need a 60-80mw 635nm to compete with the green? Also I wonder how high we'll be able to push these diodes whenever we finally get some.

Hopefully they are identical in specs or there will be some problems with collaminating them all equally.
