If the diode manufacturers are listening, we need a yellow diode. I mean they managed to pull off 520, how hard can it be :D
Do some research. It can be, and IS "that hard." Not possible, actually, unless some magical new semiconductor is researched at some point.

It's idiotic. These companies caved to the FDA, but their decision to do so will accomplish dick as far as reducing the availability of cheap, IIIb+ lasers. Last I checked, kids are buying 10 dollar lasers from ebay, they are not buying 300+ dollar lasers from LG or anywhere else, so what are CNI and LG's "restrictions" supposed to accomplish?
You have to think about the fact of well known companies vs. your average chinese ebay seller. One is easily monitored and can be easily contacted, and actually has something to lose- the other is a conglomerate of sellers buying from one unknown manufacturer, with no official business. And, if you manage to shut one down, so what? There are countless others to take its place, most likely the same entity anyway.

eta: What does a module from the CNI 593's look like, anyway? Are they anything (superficially) like the cheap 532 modules you can get on DX and whatnot? Easy or hard to install into an appropriately-sized host? Makes the "ban" even more idiotic, IMHO... because the only people building them will be the EXACT SAME ONES who would have just bought them, so what was the point?
You have to remember the laws here. Not illegal to build a laser, but illegal to buy import pointers/handhelds/whatever you want to call them that are >5mW.

it's not as if FDA can ban them from doing business here - universities, medical facilities, and similar agencies would all pitch a fit. They can't ban CNI without banning others because it would violate things like the equal protection clause and whatnot. Lawsuits would be filed, FDA would have to cut into its budget to defend itself, and ultimately they would lose. It's a business decision to cave in that it's cheaper to cave than tell FDA to fuck itself, but it makes me glad I never supported CNI or LG by buying any of their products - they are cowards and deserve neither my respect nor my money.
I think you are misunderstanding the Equal Treatment Clause; it would apply if several laser manufacturers/resellers were in court, but doesn't apply to them being regulated. You are right, it is a business decision to comply with the FDA. Makes FAR more sense to lose a fraction of a percent of profit rather than being shut down entirely. You call them cowards, but maybe you should take a second and think about it from the business perspective. Just because they wont sell to you doesn't make them cowards.

FDA is basically a bully in this regard, they will talk tough and make threats to small entities such as individual people and small companies, but like all bullies they would turn tail and run if a company like CNI decided to fight any sort of "ban" FDA might try to impose..
I guess you could call them "a bully," but you'd better slap that label on every other government agency that is tasked with regulating anything.
They go after "small" entities just like they go after large companies. Ricktrent is a good example; what he was doing (selling assembled lasers) was not and is not legal. Well, at least not without the proper licenses. There was another person (no idea who) on ebay that sold "lab lasers" he made himself, and he got shut down as well. There's another few of those that I have been monitoring, I'm just waiting to see how long it is until they are shut down.

And I guarantee if CNI were stupid enough to fight back, they would lose. Law>company.

Lurking FDA shitbags - instead of harassing laser users, how about regulating things that are actually dangerous, like dietary supplements and homeopathic woo bullshit? Dietary supplements' effects range from nothing to outright dangerous. Homeopathic quackery kills people by causing them to forgo medical treatment. "I wish you had come into our office a year ago, we might have done something about this. Unfortunately, you now have stage IV cancer and 3 months." You won't do it though, because those companies have money to fight you, and it would take some effort on your parts. You FDA trash are all worthless cowards.

So you think that something you can easily conceal in a pocket, and use to start fires and instantly blind people is NOT dangerous? Uh, OK. Comparing lasers to something as random as dietary supplements is ridiculous. People can chose not to take/be given pills/whatever the heck it is and go get proper treatment, but you can't stop someone who is 50 feet away from blinding you with a laser. Short of shooting the, which I hope you know is not legal. Plus, I highly doubt you will ever see some guy running around trying to force "natural plant remedy pills" down peoples throats on the news.

You're looking past the point guys, their main motivation for no longer producing them is they are probably at best 2% of their sales .. it's just not profitable for them to keep doing it. The fact pointers are also becoming increasingly illegal in many places is probably part of the reason why (including reduction of sales), but CNI is a business, they care about profit, not the tiny 2% of pointer sales.

This. MP, you are seriously over thinking all of this. Better you understand the laws and realize you can't do anything about it, than get worked up over something you are reading WAY too far into.

Well I do have to say this really changed my mind....

I had many thoughts of selling my pointers just to have the money to save up for something else but seeing how these will all be gone, im going to keep them. Last thing im selling is the 593.5 since I believe other companies can produce the other WL's I have if im not mistaken?

What about you guys, which would be the last CNI laser you would sell?

I just don't understand the love for yellow... just because it's uncommon and "hard" to make. Spend hundreds more just to see yellow instead of RGBP. Here these porcelain figurines are uncommon and "hard" to make too, and no FDA implications, just buy these instead. -> Schiffman's Blog | Herend

2 cents from a POWAH guy.

If i were you i would sell the laser if i could profit some, why not? and yellow are unstable and sensitive to cold like 532 are, i dont see the big deal in them, i would buy one if they werent so expensive maybe.

My 589nm Spartan would probably be my last to go if I were selling. I don't ever use it only saw it for 20 seconds a time or two and put in a safe. I only bought it because of the rarity of them and thinking I'd never see one unless I bought one.

I have yellows because I enjoy the wavelength, not because they're rare or hard to make. I quickly got bored with "POWAH"-full lasers a few years ago. Burning is juvenile, popping balloons isn't my thing.

As for wavelengths;
-green light is everywhere (though 520nm, 543nm, and 561nm are awesome shades none strike me as a must have)
-blue light (440-460nm) has poor visibility and is common
-red light (630-780nm) has poor visibility and is common

What does that leave?
-NUV (400-440nm) - poor visibility, but cool fluorescence effects, some wavelengths common.
-Sky Blue & Blue-Green (460-510) - rare and expensive, but great visibility.
-Yellow and Orange (570-629nm) - rare and expensive, but great visibility.

So, what wavelengths am I currently keeping with no plans to sell? 405nm, 589nm, 594.1nm. What would I like to acquire? 420nm, 500nm, 604/612nm.

Make sense?

That ^^ ,

15mW from a 8 Line argon or 10mW of yellow means more to me than 3W of 532nm , reason I sold mine .

Colours over power , DPSS over diodes ..

There are non-juvenile reasons for burning and wanting power, and even commenting on how green is everywhere and R&B are common eludes to you putting value on the "rarity" of those yellow pointers which are outclassed by other cheaper lasers in brightness, power, divergence, and fluorescence.

1) Aquarium Pest Elimination
2) Aquarium Algae Elimination
3) Cauterizing Trimmed Plants
4) Pest Insect Elimination
5) Laser Engraving
6) Cutting in general (some materials are better cut with a laser since it melts the edges)

Just a few.

I was bored at work, don't hate :(

I'm just kidding, I know you weren't hating :)

Fact remains that lasers have not killed anyone. Bad reactions to unregulated supplements have, and so has homeopathy (by discouraging people from seeking standard medical treatment). FDA doesn't care. Cigarettes kill tens of thousands per year, alcohol overdose kills people every year. Lack of health insurance kills ~40k a year according to a Harvard study. Oh, and Celebrex. That stuff is still killing people too. FDA does nothing about any of them, but they sure do put in work to restrict lasers. That is why their employees are reprehensible wasted paychecks. Their priorities are entirely misplaced.

Considering this maybe we should go forward with that CNI DPSS pen GB?

I don't really want to spend that much right now, but I'd be pissed to have a wavelength hole forever in my collection.

I would love to go ahead and order them but Im guessing (including me) don't have the funds right now. Hopefully CNI will hold those lasers & ship them if we decide to go ahead with the GB.

I will update the thread on November 1st to see the interest(as said before) :)

Alex, waiting until Nov. 1st may be cutting it a little bit close. If I remember correctly from the thread you said they wouldn't be finished or shipped until pretty close to the new year and I hate waiting in this kind of suspense. Especially if it ended up that they couldn't do it. I don't think we have exact dates for when CNI will shut down production and we may just miss the cutoff.

If you want I can go ahead and sent CNI an e-mail asking if it is still possible to have the lasers shipped after the New Year. If they say it isn't it's only logical to go ahead and start the GB right now, problem is....tons of people are going to be dropped-out(including me) due to the lack of funds!

Yeah, you're right. I am just trying to balance somewhere between panic and well thought out concern. That being said, I honestly think CNI would (and should) have let you know if they were going to be unable to carry out the order. Along with that I don't think they would pass on the opportunity for a big sale like that, especially if they have set what seem to be rather fuzzy dates for this all to end.
