Update:

12X #2 has about 7 full minutes of use at 470mA. Two days ago output was varying between 712-720mW at this amperage on zero minute. Today, the laser is only testing at 685mW. I can't say that this is degradation just yet, without performing a plot once again and checking drive current.

I just wanted to post this update. I will now disassemble the laser and plot it to see what's going on. I'll be back in a few...

Thanks for checking, FrancoRob. I just discovered that my DX invoice shows the SKU of my purchase and it indeed is SKU 29096- the A10B.
Also, as of now, I have about 30 minutes on the diode since 2/16/10.

Results are in: RAPID DIODE DEGRADATION

This occurred at a very fast rate running at high mAs.

This is what about 7 minutes of use has done to diode #2. New output figures:

0.25A------347mW
0.30A------422mW
0.35A------497mW
0.40A------564mW
0.42A------584mW
0.44A------607mW
0.46A------646mW
0.48A------674mW
0.50A------719mW

Compare those numbers to plot #1 at around zero minutes:

0.25A------360mW
0.30A------444mW
0.35A------527mW
0.40A------610mW
0.42A------640mW
0.44A------662mW
0.46A------701mW
0.48A------731mW
0.50A------752mW

Previous voltage at 500mA was 6.2V. Now, the diode pulls a whopping 7.0V at that current to arrive at 719mW.

I began chilling the heatsink with a can of keyboard duster turned upside down and lightly misting the side, to witness the effect of a cold diode on output. Output climbed to 737mW at 500mA while doing this. Just a little added fun. :san:

As you can see, if you set these hot, they are going to degrade likely VERY fast.

This looks to be a very fast murder test.... I have translated your data into the hereunder graph. If you'll continue to trace the life of your diode #2, I'll implement it.

Oh man, sorry to hear that... :( I guess it's not all too surprising but we all had our hopes up that the sky would be the limit... ;p

Lol, what are the odds that JayRob can churn out a pocket-sized, water-cooled host? :takeit:

I was hoping for a liquid CO2-cooled host, but I suppose water will do.

Would any others care to join our own little 12X murder project we have going here?

Slipstream is running his even hotter than I ran mine, with what looks like a similar diode efficiency. I would like to see what 7-10 minutes of run time does to that diode.

I'm calling Comp USA right now. If BDR-205s are back in stock, I'm going to buy another right after I pick up some McMuffins. ;)

The real murder fund seems to have taken a plunge, looks like we need to take matters into our own hands now.

EDIT: Comp USA discontinued the BDR-205s. I'm not sure why. I asked, and he said there could possibly be a new model on the way, but don't get your hopes up that this actually means anything.

My 8x diode still lives in my host, so I cant put a 12x in it till it dies. I turned the current to 400mA for an output of 510mW on the 8x diode so that may speed up the process. I have 3 12x diodes on the way, 2 are for a scanner.
I'm putting a couple 12x in and combining with a PBS, then I'm going to set the output at around 350mW-400mW each for a hopefully long life. This should give us some good results as I will track all the time the scanner is in use. I'll give an update when I get the 12x diodes in and installed.
FYI: BLu-ray is not optimal for a scanner because it adds little or no brightness to the beams in comparison to other colors. While it does add a lot of cheap power(which equates to more danger). The faster you scan, the less you will see the beam of the blu-ray. I'm adding it because it will help with the white balance, its low wavelength will allow you to get a white mix without spending thousands on a high power 473 laser.

It seems that there are still two different lines on the graph -- High and low efficiency. Interesting since most of us are using the 205 drive for the diode.

oh and as awesome as it is, PianoMan, I think putting "Finally got my 12x built! Damn right... a Class IV Key Chain Laser!" in your sig just might negatively inspire some of LPF's newer/less-mature members... after all the "price barrier" isn't too huge in this case. Just saying.

Great thread guys!!!

peace & thanks

@ cmak

Give me a break.

Next thing you know giving condoms in high school is encouraging orgies.

And no you don't to start a poll to debate the condoms comment.

Wait... negatively inspire them to do what exactly?

Says the person with a hilarious sig himself.

...A list of lasers he *will own* by 10/10, but only owns 1 laser, and that's less than 8 months away.
