YAY!! i finally got a working red, BUT IT DIED:(

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

No it isn't even close. If you measures around 120ma's the resistor would need to be appx. 10 ohms.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

doea measuring the voltage between adj and output help with anything?? i got exactly 1V there. so i will look for a 10 ohm(ish) resistor around there?
thanks

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

oh and it is one of those little transistor type packages, but i assume the pins are still the same?

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

Between the adjust and output, the reading should be 1.25 volts. If it isn't then it is not getting enough power. Also if we had a schematic of the circuit it would help. It would be much easier for you to build your own driver from scratch than to try to figure out the circuit. ;) I found a good website that explains the LM317 used as a current regulator.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

so your saying my input isn't enough?? it has a plug in the back for 6V in, and i am giving it 6V @ 2 amps, that then goes to everything else. I can't really give a circuit diagram, since it is a prebuilt thing, yeah i know, but i have allready tried, and have blown a diode from it, so i don't wanna blow another one!
thanks

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

The pins are not the same if it is in a TO-39 metal can.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

so should i supply the whole thing with a few more volts, or is the resistors screwing me over?
thanks

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

hmm there is a resistor right across the adj an output pins (brown red red), but that comes to 1.2k?????

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

Things, a circuit is designed for whatever it is supposed to do.

If you read 6 volts between the "voltage in" on the regulator and ground, then the regulator is getting enough voltage for our application. But we don't even know for sure the LM317 is being used as a current limiter in this circuit....do we??? Is it possible it is being used as a voltage regulator?

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

well the thing i understand is even if it _was_ being used as a voltage regulator, the brightness would still change if i changed the resistor, right?
well i tried another resistor, but NOTHING at all happened, not even a varyation in brightness??? I REALLY do not wanna blow this diode, so if it can't be modified easily, i think i will just leave it be. I can burn through a cd case fairly fast though! pics to come soon!

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

If you can, get a safety match and see if you can light it.

I will caution you that you are taking a greater chance blowing the diode experimenting with an unknown circuit than with something simple.

You would be better off powering the diode with a pair of fresh alkaline batteries. You will need to have the capacitor soldered across the diode. Then you simply put a 2.2 ohm resistor in series with the diode... between the positive leg of the diode and the positive side of the battery. This will power the diode with ~160ma's and it will burn real well and should last a long time too.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY FREAKING DIODE JUST DIED! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( it musta toucked something on my bench and shorted :'( WAAAAAA damn now i have to order another, and shipping takes forever :( anyone feel like helping a kid out? :(
damn i am so pissed off right now >:( it was great, while it lasted :'( anyway thanks for all your help gazoo, it will certainly help me with my next attempt :)

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working red, BUT IT DIED

I'm sorry to hear that Things, I blew my first diode before I even got all the parts in(case and such) so I feel for ya. But I can tell you that if you learn from this the seocnd one will be awesome. Mine has been a champ so far.
