wtb blue laser diode 473nm

i have been learning a lot and am looking to start my first build. i thought blue would be a good starting point - its a great color and should be a pretty easy build (ie no crystals or massive heatsinks required). but i'm having some trouble tracking down blue diodes.

anyone know where i could buy quality blue diodes for a decent price?

i'm already buying a couple lasers from darkarmyofone, so i'm not looking to buy a full build. i'm itching to build my own, and blue seems easy enough.

thanks to whoever can point me in the right direction!
 





Blue is the last color you will want to attempt to build. Try violet first.
 
Sorry. -- NO blue (473nm) DIODES. Did you mean "Blu-Ray" (violet 405nm) diodes?

they don't produce blue diodes? they have to be shifted from another wavelength diode?

You haven't learned (or read) enough yet.

Blue (473nm) is a DPSS type laser module (like greens). The color is produces by pumping IR laser light through other crystals to change the wavelength. They are VERY complex and sensitive to alignment.

Violet (405nm) is a diode type laser. This is the "blu-ray" laser that is so popular right now. It is MUCH easier to make a diode type laser than it is to make a DPSS type laser module.

i had read that was how to make a green, but hadn't come across that info about blues yet. shoot

Sorry guys, but you are false. There exists also 473nm blue laserDIODES from Nichia on the market.
They are 20mW units (Single mode - 9°/23° Emitter - good to collimate!) - and a sample cost 2800US$ or something like that.
Not worth for that, but still - 473nm Diodes exists and are avaiable.

Apparently not all of us know :whistle:

Edit: Ive been corrected. Nichia diodes are 445 nm. Thanks JL and sorry Dave. I should know better. :undecided:

Nichia have data sheets on laser diodes from 370 to 493nm. Their marketed products go to 450nm.
 
I'm working with "reality" here boys.

There "exists" both blue and green diodes (and even some others). However, they are still well outside both our availability and our pocketbooks (especially for a nOOb)

A scientist must work with "probabilities" NOT "possibilities."
