Seeing if anyone has a 473 nm pointer for sale in the US. It seems the only legit one available is from laserglow and there is over $100.00 in import duties I would rather not deal with. So I figured I’d ask here to see if I could avoid buying internationally!

Well, is 465 nm close enough? The DTR LPF google store sells modules with a NUBM07E laser diode in it, but research decanned laser diodes, they don't always last as long as we wish they did, but I'm not yet sure if reducing the power output to 2 watts might allow it to have a long life or not, most people run them at far more output. You can buy hosts from Survival lasers to mount it in, or a ask one of the members here who make hosts to build one for you to put it in.

I agree, 473 nm is preferred to 465 nm, I see in your signature you already have a 1.2 watt 465. What kind of power minimum would be acceptable to you at 473?

Thank you for your response ! I’m looking for something that is around 5mW that I could use safely around people and for presentations. The 465 nm wavelength itself is nice, but what I’m really after is that DPSS beam profile that the direct diodes just can’t seem to match.

Paul? You have an answer. There are some low power diodes which can do longer wavelengths than 473 which are still close to blue, but more than 5 mw. You want lower power for safety, but at 473 nm, 5 mw will be very dim, I don't think it would be very useful as a pointer at that low of a power output.

Edit: Check out these diodes at DTR LPF: https://sites.google.com/site/dtrslasershop/home/diodes/sharp-gh04850b2g-55mw - Not 473, but close enough for me, anyway. I don't know how low the power output can be turned down on these, but Paul might.

Thank you for the helpful advise! I do love the 488 wavelength and wouldn’t mind a low powered one that can be used safely around people, if that is possible to do. We’ll see what Paul says :)

To make it bright enough, it won't be safe, but you can use it safely, it's all about how you use it. I don't know, maybe it won't be as dim as I think at 5 mw. Reality is, even 5 mw isn't safe, if you looked right into it long enough, or it is focused onto your retina, it will still burn.

Sure, the Sharp GH04850B2G can come in as low as 486.5 at threshold currents. I cannot guarantee that it will come in under 5 mW, though. I do know that at 275 mA they always come in over 100 mW and tend to shift in wavelength more with temperature than current. I had some binned, but they have all been used now. As long as they remain at or below 488nm they look very blue without green in them. At least to my eyes.

Hello,

laser color is so funny. Whenever I fire my 488 nm Laser, it looks babyblue to me. As soon as I run my 450 nm laser beside the 488 nm laser, it looks greenish blue and remains so for some minutes, even when I stopped the 450 nm laser. I think, this is only one effect that shows us, how our brain cheats us sometimes.

best regards

Edgar

Yes, I have 492-493nm. That is a very confusing wavelength to observe. Our brains are tricked easily.

Thank you! I am very careful and use common sense. I don’t plan on shining it in anyone’s face, cars or aircraft. I’m just looking for something other than green or red that produces a dot that is safe enough for presentations in indoor settings. I looked for a 473 dpss because of their exotic wavelength and fine beam profile, but I might also go for a 589 nm pointer like the CNI-GLP if I can’t get a hold of the blue. I have a 50mW 589nm but it’s purely for my optics experiments and private enjoyment, and far too powerful for use around people. I thought about getting the Dragon Lasers 5mW 473nm but it seems to only be available with the Spartan host, which has the rear clicky on/off instead of the side hold-press button which is better for presentations.

That happens more with wavelengths that are above 488nm. I also have an argon 488nm single line and it is light blue as well. I have a Sharp 477nm direct diode laser that is also a light blue color. It came from some laser diodes that binned between 473nm and 478nm. It was a very limited run because it was a failure at trying to get 480nm. It was the only Sharp diode I only kept one of. I have regretted that decision ever since.
