Would OD 8 be too much power reduction for a ~1 W laser?

I'm looking at getting a good pair of goggles but the ones that I have my eyes on from oem laser systems are OD 8. I have a pair of OD 4's right now, and I can see the dot well enough to focus but it's yellow. Would OD 8's be the same way, or would I not see anything? It would suck to have to return them because I can't see well enough to focus.

I have OD 7+ from laserglow... I can still see the dot for focusing, it looks like a small white dot, hard to see on white materials/surfaces, but when on any other colored material/surface you can see it quite clearly. I suggest OD 7's to people, I have never had experience with OD 8's but I would assume they would be similar to the OD 7's

Most materials are going to fluoresce the 445nm light enough that you´ll see the dot even with OD 8+ without any problems. But at first you should tell us about what wavelength you´re talking about.

With OD 7 I can see the a small dot well on white surfaces or any other surfaces. I also have accidentally received direct reflections from the laser beam into the goggles, and it was scary (noticeable) but very dim and definitely safe. I can imagine OD 8 would not be much different.

If the dot isn't blue, your seeing the fluorescence, not the laser itself. 1W at OD4 would let .1mW through the goggles. So in actuality, all you really need is OD3 to be eye safe, which would pass 1mW of 1W.

I was wearing my OD6 YLW OEM glasses and shined my arctic at a yellow flourescent surface about 2 feet away.
The YLW goggles are for violet/blue only... they pass MOST of any other wavelength very well.
Anyways, the yellow fluorescing gave me a headache and I saw spots for quite a few minutes.

Be careful with close fluorescent surfaces. The diffuse reflections (in unprotected wavelengths) can be damaging.
