Working with 10 Watt 808nm?

I've never worked with a 10 Watt IR diode, and was hoping for some advice please...

I am wondering if using these glasses will be enough for viewing the dot for focusing and working with a 10 Watt 808nm diode?

If not, please advise...

A freind of mine used to "muck around" with one of those Coherent 60w diode bars , he set up an old CCTV cam & monitor which was allways on so he could see the beam, but he said even they it was scary stuff. All those photons flying round and you cant see a single one of them.

I agree Jay...

We use some 12W and 40W Lasers in the shop for testing
Thermopile power density coatings.

It is difficult to see the IR Beam without Goggles and even
more so with Laser Safety Goggles/Glasses.

We have set up an IR sensitive CCD camera we had in the
shop and a 19" LCD monitor to see the beam profile all while
wearing IR eye protection..

An OD 5 set of glasses will take the 10W beam down to 10mW... Providing they are true OD5 glasses.

With anything invisible I would not risk my sight for a few extra $$.

I personally would advise you to get something OD6 or greater... and get them from a good source.

Id go something like this from OEM Lasers:

I think the camera is a good idea. Even my phone camera will show IR. When i'm using my 15W I use that to look at what is happening.
Now i'm sure a lab camera would work much better, but I think you can find something that will work.

Side note....as you already know....look out for Any stray sources for reflection.

Given personal experience with o-like goggles for red and blue lasers, I would not risk using them... certainly not with 10W.
 
Well I have the glasses, but I figure I could wear them and still try not to view the dot even with the glasses on, but use the camera trick...
