Anyone tried the Windows 10 Technical Preview yet? I'm currently running Build 9860.

So far I quite like it. I skipped Windows 8/8.1 so I came straight from 7.

Now that you mention it, I will put it on a VM to test it out. So far does it seem a lot better than Windows 8?

I'd say much better than 8/8.1. They have put the start menu back instead of the start screen. The Metro Apps can now be windowed, moved and minimized like any other program and they will stay on the taskbar when minimized.

It also seems to be running fine even on my rather old hardware. My laptop is:

Core Duo U2500 1.2GHz 1.5GB RAM, with Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics chip.

I installed it as the main OS though, not in VMWare.

Well, I think I found something I don't like already.

I don't understand why I need a Microsoft account to make a simple user account. I realize it may be a nice feature to a lot of people. I just don't understand why they cant make that optional.

Not 100% sure, but Linux may be my OS of choice soon.

EDIT: So I was able to make a user account without having a Microsoft account. They don't give you that option right away though.

This is hardcoded into windows 8.1, so much so that you can't even set the damn computer up without making a microsoft account. It was different in 8, you could make a local account first and skip the MS account, but now there has to be a MS account first before you can make a local account, as of 8.1.

I'm not trying out 10 simply because it is too much effort to do so, on my already unstable 8.1 rig. That being said, I hate how unstable my 8.1 rig is, lmfao. So, I'm hoping 10 will be super stable. I'll be happy even if it has all of 8.1's crap but is as stable as 7.

Would you say it is better than 7? Coming from my view, I say 8 and 8.1 are a craphouse.

Not 100% sure, but Linux may be my OS of choice soon.

Xbuntu, ubuntu, edbuntu etc? Which one?

If they have a way to kill the Win 8 metro interface in Win 10 I will swap. I would swap to Win 8 for the SSD optimization if I didn't have to deal with the metro interface.

Yeah, the only place where you really see the Metro Apps now is just to the right side of the start Menu. There is no Metro interface that you are forced to got though. The Metro Apps behave like any other program open.

Here I have the start menu open showing the Metro Apps to the right. Normal (non-metro) media player, and IE, are open as well as the Metro weather app.

Different distros for different purposes. Although, Ubuntu would probably be my main. Then I would use kali for anything "hacking" related.

So that means I suppose you'd have several OS's installed on your HD or SSD? Or would you run it off of a flash drive?

Now that I could get used to. Looks good so far :)

But does the side keep popping out? I don't know if you know what I mean but the date and time bar kept popping out which is something I didn't like.

seems like they keep adding pointless features into windows. Im still using 7 mainly because all my editing software cant be run on 8 but for general use ubuntu is pretty amazing XD

I've been using a Knoppix HD install since
I ditched Microsoft and their crap. It is
intended to be a live DVD, but comes
bundled with lots of software and Compiz.
I tried Debian (on which Knoppix is based),
but it didn't "feel right" and wasn't worth
the hassle to get everything working.

The only thing I had to do was install the
Nvidia drivers and everything else just
works, except Compiz which has to be
started manually for some reason. Yes it
has its drawbacks, and I have run into
dependency hell on many occasions and more
than once just given up trying to install
something. There are things I couldn't get
working on Windows either, and then I was
really screwed because it's closed source
and there are no incremental upgrades.
Win7 is actually on a dual-boot, but I
don't even use it anymore.

Now Microsoft has even gone and screwed up
Outlook (Hotmail) and I feel like closing
that as well. They don't care and don't
listen to web feedback.

Appears that you actually have the option to use either the start menu or the start screen:

Just recently (yesterday) a friend had installed the preview build 9841 on my secondary pc and this thread happens to pop up right away , So far i am liking how things are working here. Not a huge upgrade like it was (from xp ~ win7) see i'm not counting windows vista :P but.. skipping windows 8 & 8.1 and 9 just feels right.
