I would be perfectly willing to sacrifice my "privilege" to drive, if it meant not sitting in traffic, or a lot less of it, and that I would be able to do other things, like read a book, or go online. Technology is really moving forward in this regard, and chances are we'll see some form of implementation within 1-2 decades at the most, barring any major cataclysm.
Regarding licensing, IMO the requirements are extremely, obscenely lax.
A 5-10 minute "road test" on a closed track with no other cars, at 5-15mph, and a written test that can be taken in languages other than English, and can be "studied" for by reading a 100 page book, but summarized in under 5 pages?
This licensing exam also only have to be passed ONCE, only. It's a joke. So of course there are drivers that have no practical knowledge about how to drive, are a bit clueless as to the rules of the road vs the printed laws, and absolutely lack experience.
On top of that you have the willfully ignorant, and the reckless a$$holes. It's a recipe for disaster.
Personally I would love to see licensing requirements become a lot stricter, for example a 6 hour driving test to be conducted on the road, in two hour increments, and more then just a pass/fail assessment, so that the tested can work on specific areas of concern.
A once a decade re-examination with both a written and driving test would also weed out a lot of no longer capable drivers from being on the road.
This wouldn't solve the road rage, driving too slow in the left lane, and distracted driving problems, but it would be a nice start. Accident rates would be reduced, insurance rates could be reduced in turn, and the industry that already exists (and I might add is really badly regulated) for driving schools, would see a boost.
Personally I had a driving class in high school, senior year, for one quarter, where two students, and an instructor were in the car. We would switch from one period to the next, between who got to drive, and who got to just sit there and watch. About a year later I took my driving test, after hiring a driving school car, and instructor, for two hours, before the test. Written test was a joke, and the driving test equally so. The only comment from my exam was that I drive too fast. That said, at the time I was a really shitty driver
That guy should have flashed his lights, maybe he even did, and she should have merged over. In NJ, I know for a fact she would have received a ticket for that video too, for driving, without passing, in the left lane, and for using her cellphone as a camera, while driving.
