but it still lases, and if i add some smoke, i can see the beam. and i dont think it will produce 20mW if it lcd on me or can it?? or does a diode also act this way if its "dead"

Usually, if a diode breaks down, it will produce less than 5mW. I would check the current in the operating laser. It is quite possible that it is NOT actually giving the diode 98mA because of either a poor connection or your batteries not actually putting out what you think that they are. 20mW out of 98mA for a DT-0811 would be odd. I wouldn't call it impossible, but it would be strange.

It is also possible that the measurement was problematic at the lab. Even EXPERTS make mistakes. Will it focus enough to burn stuff? Can you light a match with it?

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** Is the lens clean and clear? What kind of lens is it?
i havent tried lighting a match, i dont have any safety goggles. and it was the acrylic lens that came with the aixis housing.

Nice pic's. However, it is impossible to tell anything about how much power is being produced from such pictures.

i know it was just to show that it was still lasing, and i used a power meter to test the mW its posted earlier on this pg

ok thanks guys, im going to re-solder all my connections and go on from there.

I wouldn't get "invasive' until you know there is a problem. Have you measured the current in the operating laser?

i dont know how to do that :-[ :-[
im sorry but i am a noob... wouldnt that just be measuring it with a laser power meter??

**EDIT** I just realized that the thread had deteriorated into a flame war. Sorry about that. You have to learn to ignore the trash to see the treasures.

Re: why...why...WHY!!! How acurate is the test loa

thank you, ill do some reading then post back with results... might even go and invest on a better multymeter..... but thanks for the quick replys
