Why are green diodes so expencive?

Perhaps... But I would still be willing to bet that the Nichia greens we're seeing (errr, hearing about) bouncing around the real world now, are already hitting at least 5% efficiency (something reasonably close to the wall plug of DPSS).

Have we really seen any evidence that there are 515nm engineering samples out there? That is besides that Laser66 guy who says he can get anything but just ignores you or claims some NDA agreement keeps him from doing anything :tired:

Yes - there are a number of manufacturers that are using the Nichia diodes in shipping lab units. They're all under a restriction not to sell the diodes on their own. But the lab units using them are real, shipping, out in the world.

If you have a real application that requires those specific wavelengths, they are worth it. We're just hobbyists.

And those 5% efficient diodes are only ~510nm. When you push it to make wavelengths that it doesn't want to make, it seems to become less efficient. Granted, 510nm is still a new direct wavelength for us, and it isn't any less pretty than 532nm or 520nm. Here's hoping manufacturers will say 510nm is good enough to use to roll out another Pb-free projector or something.
