Which DVD drive to harvest an open can?

Indeed, doesnt look like something you'd be able to fit into a module. I guess you could still power it up and see what it does. Perhaps its doable to somehow mount it half into the 5.6mm hole of a module, keeping it in place with a bit of superglue.

Well now this is getting very interesting. Since all you had to do was pry the diode up, very similar to how I did it with he Sony drive, the Lite-On might be a good pick after all. I don't know if mine had the long chip either. I do know the Pioneer and Sony drives have the same voltage drop, 2.83 running at 350ma's. And my SenKat diode has 3 volts across it running at 250ma's. So it is beginning to look as though the lower the voltage drop with a given current, the more powerful the diode is. This is why I hope we can get a voltage vs.current chart for the phasor diodes.

I'd say that should hold true as a general trend, since higher power levels effectively require a 'bigger' diode (in terms of seconducting area) and hence a lower voltage drop for a given current.

The problem is in what determines how much power a diode can actually handle before it fails due to COD. This involves the properties of the facets on the lasing area, but it would make no sense to make an excessively large lasing area when its facets are not capable of reflecting the light it produces around.

In that respect i dont think open can diodes will perform better then closed cans per se (apart from the loss in the window), but it seems like newer, more powerful, diodes are produced as open cans in many cases. I reckon this has more to do with cutting cost than with having a can or not.
 
Well, regardless of the packages that are going to be available, I'll be there to provide a barrel and housing. I did suceed in getting that rectangular monstrosity mounted and it worked for a short while.
 
Hello fellas !!
I bought and open an LG 20X dvd burner and i found as follows:
- an open can red wich i think will be easy to extract from the heat sink housing
- another IR (nearly visible) wich is more difficulty to take out from
They both burn !!!!
The red is very bright and i think will be something above 250 mW
I didn t make any test i am waiting an aixiz module end a circuit to drive it.....
will post again when everything will be assembled and tested.

My brother bought some Samsung DVD burner and he doesn't know where the diode is and niether do I! It looks kinda like your pic above, looks like there might be 2 diodes. Everyone stay away from Samsung.
