well it wouldnt matter how far he could throw it, shrapnel travelling at the speed of sound or even faster is going to travel 100-200M at any rate, probably further .

Never a good idea to use shrapnel-producing containers for anything potentially explosive. Use cardboard/paper to reduce potential shrapnel, or thin plastics if you have to. Used to use film containers back before digital cameras were ubiquitous.
