What's a flashlight lens going to do to a laser beam?

Say I were to put a laser module and focusing lens into a waterproof flashlight host(I mean who doesn't want a waterproof laser right guys) what's the outer flashlight lens going to do to my laser beam?
 





It is going to absorb some power, therefore you will have a weaker laser.

What is the purpose of a waterproof laser?
 
If its just a flat piece of glass / acrylic / lex, you'll probably lose at most 5% power.

Also an underwater-capable laser would be sweet. Imagine diving with one.
 
My brother is learning to scuba dive and wanted to know if I could make a waterproof visable beam underwater laser. Im unsure how lasers travel through water but figured to do any testing I would need to start by making one.

So im going to look for a good diving light and see what I can do to mod it with a laser and go from there.
 
As long as the laser is focused to ∞ when it goes from the glass to the water the beam shape wont be affected. It should look pretty cool under water since most water has a lot of suspended particulates, making the beam very visible.

From LPF, i think the water in this picture has something in it like flour to improve visibility to lake-like levels.

Most waterproof devices are only rated to a certain depth, though. If the laser is going to be used exclusively under water, you might want to thread-lock/Teflon tape the lens/focus ring to the desired setting and put some kind of sealant on the back of the diode. This way the diode itself should be safe in case the main housing fails.
 
Also make sure the lens window is spotless before assembling it. If there's dirt, the laser power could heat it up and all it takes is to blacken it slightly, which will then cause a chain reaction and eventually burn through the lens. Think how burning things with a high powered beam accelerates when it chars and goes dark.
