What temp do you solder at?

First of all, I hope Im posting this in the right section. Apologies if not.

I just decided to purchase my first real soldering iron, an Aoyue Int937+.

I've never used anything other than cheapo radio shack style irons. Now I've got this temperature controlled soldering station, and realized I don't even know what temperature to solder at.

What do you guys have yours set at when doing drivers, diodes, etc ?

Im expecting my stainless host from survival tomorrow and getting antsy to complete my 445 build that I've put off for years. :-D

I have a temperature controlled solder station and I set it for 350 degrees C. It is also safe at 400 C, but don't spend a lot of time heating the pins. I can usually get a pin soldered in two seconds or less.

Not trying to hijack but could you guys also include what solder formulations you are using as well? I have done a couple budget builds, but as I am moving toward my most expensive build yet I am trying to make sure i am really prepared on every aspect. Thanks for the info!

63/37 solder has virtually no plastic state, it will solidify as soon as heat is removed unless your iron is over temp severely.
350 plus a hair is a good setting, but if you are using higher melt temp solder see the graph.
Here's a graph.

I use solder with a rosin core, 63 37 at around 200 °C. I have a very narrow iron tip for fine work. Remember to keep the tip clean - wipe on wet pad after use and before taking new solder. If you take too long on a joint and the solder stops flowing well, add a little extra flux.

I can't solder well due to a shaky hand but I have been using Harbor Freight Tools easy solder that come spiral in small plastic tube. I can't find the package its in so i'm wondering what is "easy solder" basicly and what are it draw backs?

I have never heard of "easy solder" and can't find it in searches on Harbor Freight or anywhere else, but I do know the standard 60/40 as well as lead free solder come packaged that way. It is probably just the standard 60/40 as the lead free would not be labeled easy, it has a higher melting point and is not as easy. The 63/37 has a slightly lower melting point making it the easiest to work with. The 60/40 works fine for me though.

Ok I did find it my monthly catalog. Lot# 69378. It's showing it in its 1/2 round by 4 in. long tube without the original package that said easy solder.
Its said as Lead- Free Rosin Core Solder. Not much in it as its wound like a 3/8 in. spring.
I can't compare it yet to any other type as thats all iv'e used for now.

Found it: Lead-Free Rosin Core Solder it says melting point is 422.6F, you would find the 60/40 or 63/37 easier to work with.

Wow good to know.
So what the heck is "Easy Solder" in Harbors mind? I thought thats the best I could get for me:tsk:

Maybe it's easy because of the plastic dispenser because you can just pull it out the top and always see how much is left instead of using a spool.

Brace your hands at the edge of your table/desk and have your work piece held in place with a helping hand stand or such, but bracing at your table edge will help a lot.

You know i'm beginning to think thats what their idea of easy solder is:whistle:

RedC, keeping my arms rested on the edge of a table helps and the helping hands do make it alot easier. I also only have one so I need to get another and also make up a gizzmo with bendable arms and clips at the end. Those plastic snap together oil flow tubes are so popular here and seem to work great.
:)

Right on thanks for the info guys.

I also have a very shaky hand when soldering. It seems the more I try to steady it, the worse it gets too. I dont know if it's a mental thing or what.

On a sode note: Am I the only one that has a problem pronouncing solder properly? I know it is supposed to be said like Sah-Dur. But not matter what i keep reverting back to Sol-dur.

Well when referring to a sah-during iron I say Sah-dur, or when Sah-during something I say Sah-dur, but the wire stuff we use I call solder, this might not be correct either but who cares.

Haha i feel like when i say sah-dur, i put a boston accent on it.
Kinda of like when im looking for my car keys, i say i can't find my kahkis.

.... Then my wife hands me my tan pants... *Badum Tiss*
