Wat batteries to use

yeah thats fine i had a spare all in one battery pack lying around so i used that instead of those.. so you think its most probably the batteries? BTW finished soldering.. testing the diode now
 





nope still not working ill try some differnt batteries now brb..

EDIT: tried different batteries same problem.. trying one more pair...

Until we can rule out the batteries as the problem... Yes I think that could be your problem. Make sure your battery holder is wired in series and not parallel. Do you have a multimeter so you can check your batteries voltages? I don't think 2 "used" Alk batteries will power a flexdrive for a very long time. Personally, I would go to wal-mart or radioshack and grab some lithium AA's which have a sweet 1.7v charge, last much longer, and cost about the same. Then you could do x2 AA lithiums (1.7*2=3.4) 3.4v which is about where you want it

Also make sure that the neutral pin on your diode is not touching the + pin. Check the driver for micro-solder bridges which may be VERY hard to see. That driver is tiny and is a pain in the ass to solder unless you have the right soldering iron tip. Does the driver get hot when you connect power? (indicating a short).

looks like they are running at about 1v i think.. not too sure how to use this.. would i be able to get this to work if i put another battery meaning 3 batteries altogether.. or am i better off buying 2 lithium AA's tommorow??
 
Building a test load and verifying the current load on the driver is really a good idea! The hardest thing to find is the 1ohm resistor. Radioshack usually only carries the 1w version.

no it does not get hot.. i dont know if this bridge is there i wil check my solder now!

Set your multimeter to Volts DC. (the V with the straight lines above or below it) and touch the test probes to each end of the battery. Polarity doesn't matter. If you are infact running only 1v in those batteries... that IS your problem and the flexdrive will not turn it self on without a voltage higher than 2.0v. If you can wire 3 batteries together to get about 3v+ you MAY be able to test everything. Otherwise I highly recommend buying some energizer lithium's and just using 2 of those

ok well i just tried putting the multimeter in parrallel to the diode and got some needle deflection.. what does this mean?

You put the multimeter in parallel with the laser diode? IE +diode pin and +input side of the driver? The diode will get hot, but if it is getting hot without producing a beam, it may be damaged and only putting out IR light

ok.. well it is getting hot with no beam.. i put the multimeter from diode + and -

just checked with a digital camera.. no ir is being detected from the camera...

You wont be able to get any information from that because your multimeter needs the full load to take an accurate reading. If the diode is attached it is using some of that load. I hope that made sense. What is it that you are trying to check? Now.. is the driver or diode getting hot? Just want to verify so we don't have a mis-communication.

driver is fine.. diode is getting hot.. no beam

Sounds to me like there is a short between one or more pins on the diode. Any way you can take a macro shot of the diode and driver to post up here?
