Want to project a line on the floor

:DHi all.

I put up a dartboard, and I want to project the throwing line on the floor. Laser seems like overkill, especially since this obviously needs to be continuous-duty. Anybody have suggestions for a cheap solution here?

Thanks.

A really low powered cheap red laser from ebay with a line generating lens will work. Some come with the driver already on it. Just put it ina small heatsink and supply the correct voltage to the driver ans youre allset .

No the driver supplys the current to the laser diode. If you hooked it straight to a bettery it would destroy it. If it has a small circuit board attatched to it then that is your driver.

Oh yeah, I'm not using plain diodes. I have a cheap consumer laser module with a metal barrel and lead wires. Hell, looks like I might as well just buy this and run it continuously.

Just supply it with 3V~4.5V DC. and hang it from the ceiling and your all set. You shouldn't have to worry about heat sinking it if it is truly 5mW.

I have some line lenses. They go right behind / in front of the lasers lens & project the required line.
A tacked down string would be the CHEAPEST way to go though I think ???

Then it has to be moved when vacuuming and distance remeasured. For 10$ you have an elagnat official looking throwing line that you can turn on and off.

Well $10 for a cheap laser pointer vs $0.05 for a piece of string...

Im all for the laser. You would think a bunch of laser guys would be too but I guess not. Its not like we are tslking about 100s vs a roll of string. Its apples to oranges imo. Plus would be a good conversation piece with friends over.

Unless there's a very specific need, using lasers is often a solution in search of a problem. This reminds me of these requests to use lasers for cutting stuff when a pair of scissors will do the job infinitely better and safer. This "bunch of laser guys" suggests other solutions because we understand that lasers are often inappropriate for use in certain situations -- in fact, most situations.

In this case, using a laser will cost $5-10 for the laser with a line lens + shipping, he will also need to buy a power supply, solder it up, buy batteries/plug it in to an outlet, and mount the damn thing above the target on something positionable. A piece of tape, a string, chalk, or even just some objects used as markers may be much better for this application.

Anyway, if you need a laser mounted over your carpet as a conversation piece, you need to get a life.
