Hello all,
I stumbled across this website while looking at the laser beam flashlight hack thing. hmmm.. seems too good to be true... anywho..

I have extracted a 8x dvd burner diode. It is not the IR one, i am sure. I realize i will only get around 140mW from this, and thats cool for my first build. after this im planning on a 16x dvd burner diode to hack out.

I am a 20 year old engineering College student out here in VA, and i love side projects (between jeeping, school and tinkering, im sleeping).

I would like to know if there is a rat-shack parts list that i would need? I have the mini mag light already and i ordered a housing with adjustable lens from DealExtreme.com. i think i got the right one? (5 bux?) www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5914

You mean the collimating optic you got from DX? Yes...

Glad you decided to go with the Dorcy setup instead of the M@g :)

yeah, im going to make a run to Wal-Mart today and pick up one of those. i believe i have seen them there for pretty cheap.
 
well, i have read the whole Dorsy thread... but now im more confused than ever. Is there a known working schematic, parts list, walkthrough that is safer than running the diode right from the battery?

yeah there are several scattered all over the forum. ddl has a circuit he offers. some people buy an aixiz module with a 5mw laser in it and use the board and lense and housing from that. you could steal the board from pretty much any other laser. some people just use a resistor and capacitor. the most important thing is just not to put too much power through it especially if it is not house as it will have no cooling. my 16x ran fine straight off 2 normal aa batteries. quite a few people go straight from the batteries to get more power, as some will be lost from the boards components. its always good to play around with a cheaper laser first.
 
NOT the board...the board that comes with teh little 5 and 10mw laser modules will not work for a dvd diode unless you are content to have it put out 5 or 10 mw !!! That is if it even allows the diode to reach lasing range at all. You wil need to do a circuit from scratch - there are TONS of different ideas floating around on here - the LM317 circuit that Daedal hsows is by far the most protective, with the opposite being just using a plain resistor to limit the current being the least safe - but to each their own - find a circuit, try building it, and have some fun !
 
ok... question. I have a 47uF 36V capacitor for the diode... which way do i solder this on? is there a polarity or anything?

i am just getting into all this electrical formula stuff. We are doing these formulas and such for current, resistance, etc in my physics class, but still would rather be safe than sorry. Im a walk-through type of guy, heh.

The negative side of the capacitor is marked.. ;) If you hook it up backwards, you will think you just lit a firecracker.. ;D

*whew* Looks like I was lucky at guessing on the + and - sides of my Cap. No boom, but lots of pretty red light! I just built my first burner too. Finally got time last night after the kids were in bed to tinker in the garage and see what I could make happen.

Used Daedel's MXDL Torch guide and it's quite the nice little package. Although I have to say, I didn't realize until I had mine built how much you have to refocus everytime you aim at something at a different distance. I can dial it in and burn great at 12", but then when I move to something at 3' I have to spend a few moments getting it refocused to the new distance. Figured there'd be a pretty good "setting" that would heat up at any close distance, but havnt' found any sort of sweet spot like that yet.

Brought it to work today and it's been hard to not pick it up and take yet another slice out of the garbage bag in my office * ;D*.. The Janitor is going to wonder what I've been doing when he cleans up tonight ;D

im just waiting on my housing from DX to put it all together.. Dorsey is gutted and waiting, diode is out, capacitor is ready to go in...

where did you solder the capacitor on the diode?? can you take a picture?
I am more of a visual learner :-D
