Using jayrob's build but im having a problem

ok wow i was soooooo dumb. i was twisting the top metal turner, but i realized that the plastic inner screw was actually the lens for focusing. ok so i can twist it and focus it to a very tiny dot at like 6 inches to like 3 or 4 feet even. when its dark i put it in the floor and u can see the line that the laser actually is and follow it to the dot. i tried to melt something black but it did nothing. so is my diode still working correctly and if so then how must i adjust it so that i can melt black plastics and such? btw thx for the help.

If you can see the beam, it sounds like it is working fine.  Do you remember what you set the current at?  Did you try burning some black electrical tape?  Are you able to hold the laser very steady?  Try lighting a match with the head colored black by a sharpie type pen.

Peace,
dave

so far i cant cut electrical tape even when i get the focusing perfect. i used the lm317t with to-220 body and 2 10ohm resistors connected to that with the positive wire to the LD comin off of the ADJ of the lm317t. for the resistors i have the gold band closest to the vout leg and the red bands closest to the ADJ leg. Also my resistors are 1/4 watt. is this not enough wattage? for the 1n4001 i got the top silver tiny band closest to the positive LD terminal and the black part closeset to the negative LD terminal where it is connected. for my cap i have the short pin connected to the neg LD terminal and the long leg to the positive LD termional. is all of this right or do i have one of them backwards?

Based on the two 10 ohm resistors = 20ohms=>62mA. If you want to, you could probably only use one 10 ohm resistor for 125mA which would yield significantly more mW.

ok i put the 2 10 ohms in parallel so that they would equal a 5ohm one. also for my lm317t if you look at the front where the metal top tab is in the back then i used the far right leg as ADJ the center as vout and the left as vin. this is what the back said using the one from radioshack but i feel that it is backwards. so is my lm317t correct? is my resistor direction good? and do i need to use 1/2 watt resistors instead of 1/4 watt? as just a side note im using 22 gauge solid wire rated to 300 volts 1/64 pvc, its a little stiff but i should be able to work around it better in the end hopefully.

omg omg omg. i switched my stuff around and it works!!!!! i burnt tape and lit a match. awwwwww so happy. finally so much work its so damn cool awwwww. thx a ton to jayrob and daguin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a cool feeling, isn't it? 8-)

Peace,

i was thinking. now that i have some experience i wanted to make a blu-ray laser. i saw that i can get good PFR-803t from daedal but what host and such should i use? any good suggestions?
