I know this is completely off topic, but I was given an old porcelain cup and saucer and wanted to do some research and see what I could find out about it. There is some writing on the bottom of both pieces and I am wondering if someone can please assist with a translation?

After some research, I think its Japanese, but could be Chinese.

I think the first (top left) symbol is "Zhou". The top right symbol might be "white". The 3rd symbol (2nd row, left) might mean "worrier".

Thank you!

Re: Translation needed

Should nobody reply in a while, if you have an Android phone, grab an app called "Google Glasses".

It's basically the future, packed in a downloadable app. Among a lot of other things, it includes automatic text recognition and translation from an image from your camera.

Re: Translation needed

Thanks. I have an iPhone and there are a couple apps that claim to do photo translate, but they don't seem to find any match for the symbols.

Re: Translation needed

I tried some translating software but nothing illegible.

I've had best character recognition results using Japanese so I guess it is, though nothing that makes sense to me.

I was thinking it was Chinese, but I guess it could be Japanese. I'm still downloading apps and trying. Thanks for your attempts. Have a great week!

Eh, sorry I can't be of any help :/

I'm certain we have some active Japanese-speaking members here, perhaps they would be able to help out.

Thank you. Any help is appreciated. I updated the first post. I found an ipad app that was able to match three similar images. Not sure if they are correct translations, but seem to match Japanese characters.

Here is a picture of the cup. What do you think Chinese or Japanese?

[9:17:17 PM] Jtty: can I know what this is from?
[9:17:18 PM] Zach R: 6 characters on an old cup

Thanks ZR. I appreciate your help. Makes sense what your friend is saying... I never realized Chinese and Japanese were so similar and so complex. His Chinese translation seems close to some of the symbols I was finding. I think I came up with temple as the last symbol. I was hoping for a date or company name ;)

Thank you Toutan for the link!
That looks very similar in design and the text on the bottom of that one piece with the small feel is identical. I am playing with Bing translate to see if I can get some info about the items.

I really appreciate all the help.
