toshiba dvd-rom?

i have a store that lets me come pick up broken dvd burners for free so i can harvest the diods, got one today and realise it wasn't a dvd burner but took it anyway... here are some specs i looked up for it

Rotational Speed
DVD-ROM (2.5 - 6X)
DVD-R (2X)
CD-ROM (14 - 32X)
CD-RW (8.6 - 20X)
CD Audio/Video (4 to 5.7X)


is there anything useful i can do with it?

Still a red diode for the DVD functionality, but much weaker.

is there a way i can find out what kind of diode it would have in it?

Not really any specifics.

It will have a weak red diode for the DVD capability, and a not great IR diode for the CD capability. It won't have violet or anything powerful, if that's what you're looking for.

hm that kinda sucked.....i got the diode out and put it in a module i had but the lighting on it was real weak, it was just a blob of red light, then it would become a really fine point about 4 inches from the diode, then become a blob of light again....
