I've been doing a lot of anomynous lurking around these forums but now I want to share something with the community. On with the show...
For less than $30, it is possible to build a single AAA battery powered laser running at about 70 mw which includes the price of the battery, host, diode and driver.
A TANK007 AAA flashlight from DX ($8.80), AixiZ module ($3.78) and PHR-803t in sled ($13.41). Rechargables were bought locally ($4 for 2)
The driver from the flashlight is capable of providing around 90-100mA to the diode given a 1.2V supply so is perfectly fine for driving at a safe power.
The major steps would be the extraction of the diode from the sled, mounting in the AixiZ module, trimming the AixiZ module to the correct length and replacing the LED slug with the laser diode in the module.
The entire construct is not quite as small as the keychain blu-ray laser but comes close.
And now from some pictures...
