Australian laser laws are in! Contrary to what I thought, it seems they've organized themselves a bit. el-taco has found this link to an official document about it: http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/LaserPointers.pdf , made the front page of the customs site: http://www.customs.gov.au/

Since there is a maximum penalty of $110,000 for illegally importing a laser in to Australia ( :o :o ) I figure I'm going to take my chances and apply for a permit. Both a possession permit and an imports permit. This is partly for the sake of my RPL-400 I am getting repaired. A cheap DX, maybe I'd risk going through customs. But one of the most expensive handhelds on the market? I would like to exhaust all safe options before I venture in to 'risky' with that one.

So I'm going to take the plunge and start the application process tomorrow :) ... or, today really, it's that late. I'll start by calling up the federal firearms place thingy and go from there.

This thread is so I can post down what happens at every step of the process, so anyone else interested in getting a permit can see what they're in for ;)

I was 99.999999999999999% sure you were... just figure I would ask anyway :P

Good luck, dont tell them all the lasers you have though, they may try to confiscate them, although I'm sure you already know this.

Good Luck.

Yup. Boy, if I wasn't a legal adult I wouldn't even THINK about going for a permit, lol [/quote]

Damn, sucks for me.

I emailed them anyway, just to make sure. If not it could be a Christmas present from my dad that he gets one ::)
Dont know how well thats gonna work out...

But if you get your permit you could send me some lasers ;D

i thinbk ya'all stupid..........................

tell the fu$%^$## government nothing!!!!!!!!!! the more you tell them the more they will look at you........everyone in oz just shutup, use your lasers properly and tell the dickheads in power stuff all..........................

just remember guys,if your caught not wearing a stupid helmet while pushbike riding in australia the bastards fine you....................this comes about when good men do nothing.........

remember guys.............. SCREW THE BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUR GOVERNMENT IS TOTALLY FASCIST AND CONTROLLING, so dont give them any more imfomation about you than you have to.

have a nice day :)

I'd appreciate it if you didn't tarnish my thread with posts like that okay.

Simple fact of the matter is the government are in control, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. They ultimately have the power to make your life hell.

I'll protest the laws my own way. But for the time being, I want to see what happens when I try it their way.

Although, you have successfully managed to put a seed of doubt in my mind, so I'm going to think about it a bit more before committing. I'll think a bit more about how easy it is to make an RPL-400 look like a flashlight too...

Canada FTW!!!! ;D But, do you think that the Canadian government will also try to ban lasers?

P.S. Today is Canada day! w00t!

I would go for it. The worst that can happen is that they will say "no permit for you". Prove to all the other laser hobbyists from AU that it is possible to keep and use the lasers, with the governments permission, in a responsible way.

I'll call up tomorrow. Was going to today, but I wanted a little more time to consider what this would mean :)

And hey, since I shipped off the RPL-400 today, if they raid my home after a failed application at least my best laser will be safe ;D

Nah I dont think they will, the canadians are cool like that, they are one of the least controlling goverments there is.

And dont argue with me, I've lived and been to school there, and my sister has lived and worked there, and I've been there many other times aswell, 99.999999% of canadians are really nice people.

Also, happy canada day !

Also again, where do you live in canada ?

Where did you ship it to? :-/ Are you allowed to export? Or did you just ship it within Australia?

Btw, sorry about your thread having 2 or 3 side-topics now. ::)

And to meth400, you know there's a good chance the evil controlling government is watching this forum. ::)

I shipped it back to Opotronics to get it repaired. I already checked and there are no restrictions to exporting lasers, except for military type lasers :)

PS: Canada rocks!
