The problem with politics is that no one follows politics. Obama says McCain does this or that and McCain says Obama does this or that. The problem is that the motivations of these individuals is a compilation of the circumstances surrounding whatever decision they are being derided over. Each camp makes broad accusations and when the candidates try to explain the rationale for their decision no one listens primarily due to short attention spans. Voters, in general, simply hitch their wagons to whatever broad statement suits them with absolutely no regard for the truth. How many people look up the voting records of their politicians? None right? You can see it all just by going to the house or senate websites. How many people ask their politicians to justify why they made a particular decision? None right? Well as your representative they are required to justify it to you. How many people really understand what their political party really stands for? None right?
I'm a bastard child of the Republican party. I am a Constitutionalist believing federal power is derived from the Constitution but also limited by the Constitution. The federal government is not allowed to do more than what is written in our founding documents. I believe the interpretation of the Constitution should be as narrow and conservative as possible. As a living document, if something is so important as to expand the government then it should be added as an amendment, but not until. Because an amendment is so important, it will bring national debate. It prevents any branch of government from silently usurping power without a mandate from the people.
I am fiscally and militarily ultraconservative yet I'm socially moderate. I miss the days of Ronald Reagan. Why? Ronald Reagan was a very unique individual when it comes to presidents. He was the only president, if my memory serves me, to be both a Democrat and a Republican. He grew up and worked as a Democrat but entered politics as Republican after a major shift in how he saw the world. For him, the Democratic party failed him. What I respect about Ronald Reagan is that he was a man of his word. He had the character and integrity to pursue his beliefs. He said what he was going to do and he did it. He was so honorable in his actions that both parties in congress respected him. You may or may not like his politics but no one could deny his character. That is what attracted so many people to him.
We need another president who has the honor, integrity and character of Ronald Reagan. I don't even care what party he or she comes from just that they lead our country. I'm not talking about the prize of getting elected. That's what the two bafoons up for president are doing now. They are both running toward the prize. They are not thinking about the four years after winning where they are responsible to the American people, where the decisions they make could bring the demise of the country. When did the position of president become just another notch in the political belt?
