Anyway, as Alex mentioned, there's retro-reflecting mirrors already up there for precisely this purpose. They can fire a laser at the moon, watch for a few photons to come back and then calculate the distance and probably some other stuff from that information.

Schedule far in advance for as many people to see it as possible. Would we discover other laser enthusiasts nearby? Would we be alone with distant onlookers fearing UFOs?

This could be the final event of International Laser Day.
