The "Kip-Kay laser hack"?

I was drawn into the laser world one day while browsing through instructabls.com.
I saw the "Kip Kay Laser hack" I watched, and was amazed.
I googled for a good long time.
I heard that all it is is just a good way to kill a LD.
Then, I found this forum.
Is it true?
Is there something it is missing to make it work?

It will work, but the diode will die VERY quickly. When building a laser, you at least have to use a resistor to limit the amount of current going into the diode, and a capacitor to even out any voltage spikes from the batteries, and that's a bare minimum.

What size of each should I go for?
The diode I have is(after A LOT of googleing) is 650nm 200mw.
Any ideas?

But..
