Surprised by Dismantled Greenies - Comparison

I was quite free on today and suddenly got the urge to be a little bit adventurous. Hence, I did a little autopsy(dismantling) on my 2 Greenie.

Hopefully, seniors here may enlighten me and others about the difference of these two diode design.


1) <100mW

I noticed it was a plastic collimator and quite a big heat sink when compare with the other one on below.

2) 200mW

I noticed that was the crystal lens in the pic, small heat sink and the diode was ....huh ...kinda LED diode? Is it a 808nm diode?

Is this the standard diode that Chinese manufacturer use for cheap high power 532nm? ....or worse than that?

A light-emitting-diode diode you say?

Might be a photodiode to help stabilize the power. Put something black in front of it and see if the power changes.

That LED is probably to light up the indicator above the switch.

Will cutting off that LED indicator can boost up some power for the laser diode? ...or it will short circuit?

Cutting off the LED power indicator might not have any effect. It only consumes around 20ma of power.

Btw, your title is wrong. There is no such thing as a 532nm diode...yet.

No 532nm diode but there is a 510-520nm diode.

That LED is probably before the circuitry used to power the laser itself, and consumes a minor amount of power compared to the laser itself. Plus it's nice having an indicator light.
