I know, I know, the title should be 60W, but 60,000mW sounds so much c00ler :o

I just bought this on ebay,

And now im wondering what im going to do for power. I was thinking of batteries and a buttload of caps to fire it in bursts.

Im also curious if anyone has ever used one of these, and what am I looking at for optics? Is the output like a typical multimode 808nm as in a rectangular beam? I know is an array, but curious on shape.

Lastly, how would OD-4 goggles hold up to both reflections and a direct hit? Not that I plan on a direct hit ;)

And dont forget to say a prayer for my LaserBee I [smiley=evil.gif]

Found a video of this laser, these can melt and cut glass 8-)

this is crazy, how much?

and is this 808nm vissible and is it pulsed.

i dont think you want to be hit anywhere with that thing...

purchase a 3.3 volt supply from ebay which has a current rating of at least 60 amps, purchase about 20 resisters that are 5w 0.05 ohms, and build a series-parallel arrangement to have a voltage drop of about 1.3 volts at 60 amps... let me see... doing math....About 0.21 ohms... make that 0.25 ohms to have some safety marging... That also makes figuring your series parallel config easy. You will have to build a large series parallel resistance so you dont exceed any individual resisters 5 watt power rating. Addertooth

P.S. I have experience with the FAP-800 fiber coupled power diodes.

Awesome piece of equipment!! :o :o

As to power supplies, I've seen some Laser PSUs on ebay from time to time but check out Sure electronics on ebay. They stock Meanwell 125W, 5 volt supplies (much cheaper than elsewhere) that may be downwardly adjustable.

Hey wannaburn, I have the same diode array. The output is basically a long rectangle, and you'd probably need some expensive cylindrical lenses and stuff to get a square beam (best you're gonna get from something like this) but for my laser I just use a nice AR coated lens and it's able to focus the beam to a point fairly well.

For my laser I built the supply myself with a Variac hooked to a rewound microwave transformer, then a bunch of 25 amp bridge rectifiers, a ton of 60,000uF capacitors. (it's basically just a very beefy low voltage linear power supply) and it works well to power the diode bar.

It eats CD cases for breakfast unfocused at 40 amps 8-)

I've got a closet full of microwave transformers from my other high voltage/high energy physics hobbies. I've used rewound microwave transformer based supplies for a lot of applications: Filament supply for an 833A tube, after rectification and smoothing as a power supply for ZVS flyback drivers.

Last night I was considering the use of such a supply for this same application (well pump 808nm pump diodes in general). I still plan on eventually buying a nice lab laser diode driver, but I'll probably have to put down 200-300 USD for it.

Yeah they don't give them away... I put out over $300 US for a 40A Opto Power Corp. Lab Laser
Diode Supply off eBay...

Oh yeah? Well I've been on earth for apprx. 698,284,800,000,000,000,000,000 femtoseconds.

I've always thought of using a few old computer PSUs in parallel with a few power resistors, myself.

That's cool that you have one though. That's probably the best route for me. Just might have to wait a few months or longer.

I scored it for 149. US Not sure if there was an error in the listing, as the opening bid was 149. and the buy it now price was also 149.?

Ive been looking at getting one for a few months, and at that price I felt it was time ;D

@Mariomaster, I remember the marhmellow video, wasnt sure who else had one around here. Did you happen across the spec sheet for this? Looking at the ebay ad I cant find a model number.

I was thinking of making an array of NdYvo4 sets from all the greenies ive slaughtered. I havent seen this done, but im sure there must be someone out there who has tried. 20-30 crystal sets clamped together in front of this would look pretty cool ;)

For the power supply im thinking a cluster of 5A LMXXX regulators and a big heatsink, 10 of them to be exact. I dont want the power supply to be bulky or really heavy.

Any ideas on a test load? lol, thats a lot of 1N4001 diodes :-?

I have to do some reading on this particular laser head if I can find a datasheet from coherent. Im sure like most of their diodes, this thing could handle alsmost double its rating ::)

For the cooling I have 1 Johnson Controls pump laying around and some large TEC modules to keep the fluid cool.

Anybody have an idea if my OD-4 goggles are any defence against reflections at this power? I would like as much barrier in between the light and my eyes. :-/

OD4 at 808nm should reduce the power to ... 6mW ::)

That is most reassuring :) 6mW is a walk in the park, I think im going to add a small buzzer for power on indication just in case.
Though I dont think I will soon forget the insane consequence of any incidence with this. I plan on giving it its very own table top until I can figure out what to do with it.

yeah, that is if your goggles are ACTUALLY OD4 at 808nm  :o

They are rated on the side as OD4+ @ 808nm +/-20nm and have found even at 836nm no light passes. I may just buy a better pair to be sure, and like most, hide behind a CCD until the level of protection is confirmed.

I may even sacrifice my current set against a direct hit just too see what would have happened if my eyes were on the other side of the lenses. :-/
