Spymodex's new 300 mW Ultra-Power "PRO" Red Laser

Re: Spymodex 300mw Ultra power red laser (read: LE

Even if it isn't 300mW only like 100 or 200, you can still light a match but the beam must be focused to a tiny spot on the match. This way ,energy density is higher.

Thanks a lot, guys. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I tested the thing more carefully on my way home -- certainly, if it were a LED flashlight, it wouldn't be capable of doing such things. I really doubt too that it's 300 mW, but it is bright indeed. Properly focused, the beam can be easily seen (at an angle of 30-45 degrees) even right next to the current moon (and it's just 3 days before full.) Of course, the "clean" air of Sofia must be helping too. ;D

I must admit that I've been strongly prejudiced exactly because of all comments on Spymodex's products I had read here. I really expected to receive some piece of junk. And, I have to admit as well that I've always thought that lasers produce a more or less tight beam on their own. This largely explains my mistake.

Concerning the protection, thanks a lot indeed for reminding me. I'm glad I purchased a red laser -- by the time I placed the bid I was completely unaware of that nasty IR light that might be pouring out of the cheap green lasers. But still, of course, even if red, and even if not 300 mW, you're absolutely right that it's very capable of doing harm. Could you recommend good goggles that could be purchased online?

And lastly, I guess other people might be interested in this very product too. It seems to be new, and I, personally, was not able to find anything about it on the Internet while I was waiting for it to arrive. Unfortunately, as I said, I hardly have any experience, but I'll be happy to do testing if someone gives an advice on how to perform it. It would have been easier if I had an optical power meter, of course, but even the cheapest ones seem to be not that cheap. :(

BTW, there was a small coil spring between the lens and the laser diode. When I took off the head, it fell out, and I decided to not put it back in. It has been somewhat crudely cut from a longer one, and so one of its ends was pretty sharp and pointing out. This looked disturbingly well capable of scratching either the lens or the diode. The laser seems to be working well without it, but, then again, it must have been there for a reason. Any ideas?

Sofia as in Bulgaria? :D I went through there this summer :D I don't think there's anything wrong with the air ::) ;D
Anyway, I guess you got lucky. Some spymodex customers didn't even get lasers.Or led flashlights, or anything :P If it's as visible as you described I'm guessing it should be somewhere between 130-180mW at least :-/

A lot of people like the goggles from wicked lasers.OD2 should be enough for <200mW.I don't know if you're gonna like the price though.

As for the review of the unit, you can post more pictures(beamshots, and of the unit itself) and maybe some burning vids. And yea, too bad powermeters are so expensive :(

EDIT: the spring is there to push the lens on the top of the module and keep it in position.Without that the lens may fall towards the diode and/or flip sideways and your laser will become out of focus. You should use some sandpaper or a file on that spring end and put it back. ;)

Wow! :o It's really interesting coincidence -- after all, not that many people visit Bulgaria. :)

Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed your time (even if just passing through) here. Unfortunately, Sofia today is not the clean and green city it used to be when I was a child (think 70's and 80's.) Still, though, there are things to like -- as Mt. Vitosha for example, which you must have seen, undoubtedly.

BTW, besides the pure fun, I was considering the laser for a tool during my hiking trips. Not that much for a ligher, of course: it would have been quite eccentric, I think -- ;D -- but more as a signaling tool. I often travel till late in the evening -- well into the darkness of the night, actually -- so it might come handy. And it will certainly make a good pointer when I show the constellations to my companions on those glory moonless nights high in the mountains. :) Of course, I have to be careful with it too. Folks, thank you very much again -- to all of you who responded. I'm so impressed by your hospitality. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

It's pretty late here, so I'd better go to bed now. Tomorrow is a working day in Bulgaria, thus I don't know if I'll find time, but these days I'll definitely make more photos, and will keep you updated with my impressions on the laser.

BTW, I guess shane.dominic deserves some positive feedback on eBay for this one. Let's just hope the laser won't unexpectedly burn out right after I leave the feedback. ;D

I'm just north of you in Romania, I guess we pretty much have the same air,but hey, it looks clean enough to me ;D ;D I guess romanians visit Bulgaria more often.I was surprised I tried to talk english in the gas stations but they answered in pretty good romanian :o I have no idea how it was in the 70s and early 80s , I've only been alive since 88 :P
About the laser, unfortunately lasers don't really make good flashlights because they eat batteries fast and are monochromatic. And don't make good lighters for obvious reasons. But there are plenty of fun stuff you can do with it in a hiking trip. It's always fun to see how far it goes at night.Signaling like you said.Pointing out constelations and stuff on the ground too.Well greens work better for pointing anything since their more visible, but if you can see your beam at night, it's visible enough. :P Anyway, you're gonna get a way better range than any <5mW pointer.Plus, you never know when you're gonna run out of matches for the campfire ::)

Re: Spymodex's new 300 mW Ultra-Power "PRO" Red La

Speaking of smog above Sofia, it could make up for a nice beam medium at rush hour during winter. We still get to see beautiful red layers of nitrous oxides in the sky not too far from SF every now and then. The same held true for Rousse-Giurgiu (in the years of Switch's conception/birth and a little after that ;) ) with ammonia fumes, I think. This makes me wonder if any of those gases could be made to fluoresce with a bluray. ::)
