spot sans beam?

Having been intrigued by lasers only a matter of hours now, I have many questions. At the risk of being in the wrong forum AND taking the prize for dumbest question - is it possible to create a well defined spot with a green laser at, say, 25 - 30 yards at night WITHOUT a visible beam? Sorry, I'm just a retired robotics tech. Thanks.
 





I can see my 5 mw green a night a a little bit. It is not a green beam that shoots across the sky but its there. were did you get this laser from. I would suggest a 5mw red for what you want to do without seeing the beam.

It depends on the suspended particles in the air...
In a total vacuum there would not be anything
for the Laser's Beam to reflect off of.

You could use a low powered IR Laser hitting an IR
detector card... or use a CCD camera to see the
spot

Just curious, actually. My interest began when I was on vacation several weeks ago and was on a seventh floor condo veranda overlooking a portion of Myrtle Beach, SC on a clear night. I noticed some green laser spots being played on the beach obviously originating from a few stories up, but could only occasionally detect a beam. I presumed the laser was of a low enough wattage and the air clear enough most of the time to make the beam undetectable.

Laser beams are less visible when viewed from the side especially at distance.

Edit: If you were viewing it from the side of course.

Something to do with rayleigh scaterring, I'm not 100% (SOMEONE HELP MEEEE ON THIS ONEEE)
