found the following to be a somewhat simplistic but however interesting virtual museum of sorts with images and descriptions of various vintage to present day lasers

Looking at those pics reminds me of seeing a 1970 hard drive of 2 gigs vs
thumb drives and micro SD cards of today. Insane how far development has come.

Interesting.... I wasn't aware they had Fiber Coupled Semiconductor
Laser Diodes back in the 70s....

I still have some of those Melles Griot beige HeNe tubes from the 80s
hiding somewhere in the shop.

Technology is always moving forward but it seems faster and faster

Oh, it's not just you. I'm sure you've heard of Moore's Law as it applies to silicon integrated circuits.

Case-in-point: A single quad-core CPU can now deliver the same raw floating-point performance attained from a pair of six-core CPUs just over 36 months ago (Istanbul turns three soon).

And I'm sure you remember how quickly it took us to get 52x CD-RW drives, 22x DVD-RW drives and 12x BD-RW drives. In each case, all under 4 years.

It's only going to get faster from here, until we brickwall silicon as a physical medium.
