I received an email out of the blue from Topic Light co. in China I have never contacted before offering a very nice looking scanner. From the looks of it, it is too low of a price for something which appears to be uber high quality and at such a high output. Has anyone here bought anything from this company before?

This is a cut and paste of their email:

PRICE is USD2,450/unit:

638nm Red 1W

520nm Green 1.5W

447nm Blue 3W,

PT-40K scanner system.

No, that is not exactly an extraordinarily low price, you can probably find several cheap companies offering similar projectors for similar price.

These cheap projector are often not very high quality though. I don't know how you infer that the one you were offered is high quality, they barely say anything about it. There are many aspects to consider rather than just power and scanning speed. For example:

- divergence
- how well the beams overlap
- noise level
- are the dichros adjustable or fixed
- the scanning width
- is the modulation analog or on/off (this is a big one, analog modulation looks way better)
- the overall quality of the components
- the size of heatsink and duty cycle
- warranty

And are the given specs even correct? Many chinese manufacturer rate their projectors at a way higher power and scanning speed than they actually are, no different than the pointer industry. The projector may be less than 2.5W total at the aperture and 20-30kpps and it wouldn't really surprise me.

My mistake, I somehow missed the 2 in front of the 450 and you are right, I really don't know what the quality is, I only had an impression it was quality because it looked so cool to me. I really know nothing about projectors and because of that, looks is all I can judge by and from what you just explained, not a way to do so.

Haha, if the price were $450 then it would have been a great deal indeed
