SOPA/PIPA blackouts

@xoul - Please edit the name of the company from your post.

@borgqueenx - I have a feeling SOPA/PIPA will be dropped. It won't be long before we see another attempt though.

There is already an alternate piece of legislation called the OPEN act... not very good either.

Ok, can you please explain why? Who are they?

They are the company you named.

They make the diodes which power all the class 4 445nm lasers we all love... well maybe you not so much anymore...

They didn't take too kindly to finding out their projectors are being torn apart, and the diodes are being re-purposed for handheld lasers.

As to the reason for editing out that company name, that's a bit more interesting....

LPF actually currently operates under the protection of the DCMA (Digital Copyright Millenium Act) Safe Harbor clause whereby c0ld... the owner of LPF is not responsible for the posts and content creation of LPF members.

If he was, the site would have been shut down a long time ago.

Even so, with Safe Harbor protection, it's still a good idea not to draw undue attention from a huge corporation with plenty of lawyers.

What's interesting is, if SOPA/PIPA pass, LPF as we know it, may well end, since the Safe Harbor provisions would no longer apply.

I have no issue with companies revolting the man/big brother by
boycotting or demonstrating their opposition to a planned a$$
F%^k by their government...

I actually applaud their willingness to show that they will not
fold under the proposed unconstitutional US legislation...

I personally believe that all the internet "Banner" decisions are
the way to get the message across to the legislators that the
voters have spoken...

Ah, that clears things up, thanks. I tried to find info about them on my own but Google didn't yield results that seemed relevant. But no, I still don't hold any grudges against the 445 diodes. My laser apologized and we're friends again. :p

Here is another example as how the laws that we currently have are going too far. Feds Kill Megaupload (Updated)
150 million users found out today that all their content in there cyber lockers is no longer accessible possibly gone forever because some of the users decided to put illegal content in them. This is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. I hope all the legitimate users band together in a class action suite and if the government loses their case they are found responsible for any damages caused by loss of access.

Wow, that's crazy. I just downloaded something from megaupload yesterday.

DCMA and CURRENT laws are more than sufficient for US copyright holders to protect said copyrights.

As if anymore proof was needed.

The problem is, not every country will be willing to play along, so SOPA/PIPA are meant specifically to target sites not hosted in the US/EU spheres of influence.

This will fragment the internet, and lead to a major crackdown on free speech.

Welcome to socialism comrade:beer:

In Soviet America censors copyright you!

It's a joke now but it isn't all that far fetched at this point! My wife made a comment earlier about how if this nonsense continues, you'll get sued/strikes/jail for wearing clothes on a YT video if you don't credit the designer for showing off their design!

Oh, IDK... it's not all that bad, there are some cute girls on youtube I wouldn't mind seeing without any clothes:p:shhh:

It's pretty sad that 55 people didn't have an opinion before that.
