Sony 20x burners $24 at Newegg

I think these sony ones are the best ones that have been found. I mean the phazor died at 700mA and it was only putting out 323mW, I'm not saying that's not a lot, but compared to the sony diodes it isn't much once you compare the current needed to achieve that output.

I agree but remember this diode is a hot one. However, it has always been my opinion any open can will run circles around the phasers, and I am sure when DrLava does more testing on them the truth will prevail.

AMK, no Jay's diode was not mode hopping...a diode doesn't mode hop. I think the reason he saw a sudden decrease in power may have been on account of the fact he is using 1/2 watt pots in his icebox. Or maybe his battery pack wasn't fully charged.. ;D

Oh, it's a FREAK!!! lol, but still, I might be getting some of these after my senkat diode dies, especially since they're easy to harvest. :P

Better slap it into a heatsink!...

I know it's a great heatsink, but I think I'll make my own, shouldn't be too hard since I just need to cut an aluminum rectangle to size, then drill a hole in the middle of it and put it in my enclosure. ;D
Oh and does anybody know how much aluminum costs, like just a 2x1x1 piece.

Ok I just got the burner in the mail and harvested the diode and added jumper wires on to the short leads. It fired up at 2.3v 200ma Great! Nice and bright, didn't want to push it til I mounted it into a Aixiz mount. So I did and re - tested and it was dead. whats the trick. This is the second diode I've killed. I have a adjustable power supply that adjusts current and voltage independently. (like this one in the picture) Do I still need a driver? Or should I still use a variable resister in line? I'm almost ready to give up. What is a good starting point with voltage and current? And just to make sure what is the correct + and-- on the pins. HELP...... PS If I kill another one does anyone have a source to a good relatively cheap diodes that have a better survival rate? :-[

there is one important thing to keep in mind - LDs are not light bulbs - they do not tolerate current spikes resulting in optical yield exceeding the maximum its facets can handle before they melt. even a 10ns spike with the proper magnitude can render an ld dead.
so- whats the deal with the Mastech PS:
if there isnt load connected to its terminals, the voltage will reach the value preset with the Voltage knob thereby charging all filter capacitors in parallel wih the output. once u connect your LD, the capacitors rapidly discharge thru it till the voltage is stabilised at the value determined by the current setting and the forwrd drop of the laser diode, and, if the charge voltage was high enough to result in a fatal current discharge spike, the diode dies.
furthermore, you dont know how the output of this PS behaves upon cycling the power on/off. there may be overshoots/transients that the LD has not been able to handle.
if i were you /and i was you at some point/ i'd build a simple well-filtered driver first /around the ever so famous LM317 regulator/ and use the lab PS to power it.

Sorry for the noob question, but do these open cans fit into the Aixiz housing? Any recommendations for sourcing a housing with a glass lens?

Thanks for the input. I saw a schematic for a driver last week for a homemade driver that looked simple to build but can't remember where i saw it any info on that would be great. I have so many question I don't know where to start. I want to eventually house this in a Mxdl flashlight and will be sure buy a custom heat sink for the laser. can anyone show me a simple schematic for this set up? ::)

geek, these open cans fit in aixiz housings they're 5.6mm, you can get the aixiz housings at the link I posted above your post, but I don't know where to get tha glass lens ones.
teeroy, start a thread in the experiments and modifications section, this thread is for the discussion of the open cans from newegg, and also more people will respond if you post up there. ;)

Appreciate the help. I have a couple of the burners on the way then. Shipping is a killer though. Sometimes I hate living in HI.

ya but carefully, open cans and newbies dont mix, "they are very fragile", direct quote from Amkdeath on virtually the same question I had last week.you might be better off getting one already in the aixiZ module. i know this cuz im a nube as well and Amkdeath pointed this out to me. go for a closed can DDL or a senkat diode @ 150mW or get it already installed. baby steps!! :P
I would ask daedal for some advice, he makes and sells lots a stuff, but he is also very busy with projects of his own, so be patient for a reply. he seems to be the go-to guy on this forum, and his knowledge is mind blowing, i said it earlier today, i would trust his opinion over anyone elses.
Good luck and hapy lasing.
Alan

Well I don't think you should ask daedal anything right now since he's busy with two GBs :o
You can always ask me, or if you want to ask somebody with more experience you can go with Gazoo. ;)
